Official TSB for automatic trans failure from Toyota.

Whether it be swarf or casting sand, hard debris in the fluid means it could be anywhere; blocking small channels, jamming check balls, causing solenoids to stick, tearing seals, gouging journals, trashing bearings...

Solving it completely means either replacing everything in the fluid path with known good parts or painstakingly disassembling everything and cleaning every single part that's still good while replacing anything you identify as trashed. Assuming you even can. You can guess which of these things is more practical at the warranty service level...

Be nice to know if there was record or a way of knowing if they revised their inspection process for a certain date so that you know if there was a build date after the new inspection.

 

In case the list of affected VINs hasn’t been posted in this thread for a while, the VINs with the last 5 digits after these were made after the issue was corrected, and are not affected

Mine is in the list of affected, but not all owners are having the issue. It’s my opinion they should just do preemptive replacements free of cost for owners’ peace of mind, given how much they’ve paid for these

 

You want them to do a service that costs many thousands of dollars that there’s no evidence is even needed, tens of thousands of times, to make people feel better?

That’s not an argument based in reality.

They’ve got a campaign set up to take care of the problem in instances where it actually does happen. That’s entirely reasonable.

 

Yea they will never do that if no problem is noted. However because its a known problem and well documented they should send out notices to extend the warranty for the particular problem. Having that in writing is the key. My personal experience BMW did that for the N54 turbo engines where they warrantied the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) for 10 years 120K mi because it was such a problem on the earlier models. That was just one example for BMW's there were more. Yes they had issues but BMW backed them - for the most part? That car (335i) after I tuned it was a rocket ship though.

 

They very likely will extend the warranty for the affected VIN's but there's no reason to do it now. None of them are even halfway through the factory warranty.

 

For what it’s worth, whatever translation/optical character recognition was used to extract those numbers failed a bit. Turning 5s in to Ss etc

 

this list doesn't include the hybrids, did they get cleared?

 

The previously referenced TSB was superseded by T-SB-0094-24 which includes the hybrids.

 

My truck falls into the S/N range for potential issues. The frustrating thing is Canadian dealers don't seem to have any record of T-SB-0094-24...

 

How long was the wait to get it out of the shop?

 

And why are you so "sure" of this, born-today poster? Please enlighten us all.

 

Sorry to hear about that but your broad claim does not follow from your individual experience. Did your failure just happen and has it been positively identified as the same issue as the TSB covers? I can certainly sympathize with being extremely pissed at a failure at 1k miles, but this is a forum to discuss things so providing more detail beyond a vague post would help.

 

My hybrid falls in the tsb.. 7000 miles and I've been pulling 4000+ lbs like I stole it since the first week I got it. No issues so far.

Have we found a clear symptom to be looking for? Other than a code...

 

truck doesn't move... if it happens its gonna happen wherever i dont think you will have any warning. but seems like if they have made it past a thousand or so miles they are fine. mine OR hybrid has 10k miles and im not to worried about it.,

 

There has never been a TSB for this in Canada

 

My '24 fell within the TSB, and I was good until it hit right around 8000 miles - started slipping rather quickly once it started. But not everytime it was driven. Dealer couldn't replicate (of course), and the service advisor told me that parts were backordered, so if they had determined it needed work, there wasn't anything they could do immediately. He also would not give me an date for the parts availability. It did contribute to my trading it for the like-new '22 I'm currently driving.

 

how long did you drive with it "slipping" most transmissions that slip bad. will usually not move soon after that. its rare for a transmission to slip "bad" intermittently but be hard to duplicate. cars now days have codes for when transmission slips. like a wrong gear ratio code. or a to long to shift code. i find it hard to believe that you thought it was shifting terribly and rather quickly getting worse but could not duplicate it for tech and the tech could not duplicate it either. what exactly were your symptoms so we can look for them also?

 

The first thing I noticed, was harder / "chunkier" shifts in the morning when it was still not fully warmed up (driving out of the neighborhood), but again, not every morning, and some of the shifts were much harder than normal, while others were harder but not as "abrupt" (?). Some mornings, she'd shift completely normal too. After reading posts on TW, I realized that it might be the beginning of the trans issues popping up.

The wife and I were headed home after a dinner out, and when we started to pull into traffic, the truck just paused / delay before continuing forward. Wasn't turbo lag, wasn't traction control letting the wheels spin - just didn't go for a second or two. But enough that it put us at risk of getting t-boned that night. Luckily the person coming at us recognized we weren't moving and slowed down. No warning lights came on the dash either that I recall, but I also wasn't looking at the dash.

A week or so passes, and it does the same thing at another stop sign. Give it gas, and it kinda does... nothing... then drives like normal. Got it to the dealer a couple of days later, but they didn't see anything they could address apparently. Told me it was noted in the service records, and if it started to repeat the issue more regularly, or if I saw any warning lights stay on, to bring it back in.

After the two near misses, and the lack of any real confidence from the service dept, I decided to trade it. There were other reasons as well: I had issues with the brake controller, door panels, and drivers door hinges. My truck was an SR5 trim, so I also wanted to get a power drivers seat, which came standard in my '22 SR5, but not the '24. It wasn't a snap decision, but I also didn't waste any time after making my mind up to make the switch. I got a great trade in for the '24 and actually had the dealer cut me a check for the difference between the trade and my purchase.

If/when, Toyota offers a long bed hybrid version outside of the Trail Hunter, I might be tempted to jump back into the 4G waters, but my 3G is also paid for and its really nice having no car payment. Hoping this old tech truck will be trouble free (so far, so good!)
