99 3.4 2wd tacoma. 5 sp manual. I had a shop change the fluid 2-3 year ago. Don't drive it too much. When I opened the side plug on level ground after running the engine for 5 minutes the fluid came out pretty fast, thin and milky looking. Not dark like I was expecting. Is this due to transmission wear? Bad fluid? I don't drive through water. Help, lol, I can't afford to replace it.

Automatic I presume. The dreaded Milkshake has reared its ugly head again. Search for Pink Milkshake and do not start it until fixed

Change the fluid, take it for a drive and change it again, that will get most of the contaminated fluid out.

Your owners manual will have a listing for the recommended fluid.

Then it must have sat underwater for a while to leak in.

Well if it's not golden are a darker color. Hard to throw darts at answer. Cause and effect. Maybe shop just told you they changed it.
