I know cost wise its a wash having to buy the 5th tire but I like the idea of having a matching spare and when I do replace tires only once in 44 years of driving have the new tires been the same size/brand as I removed. If I didn’t put the spare in rotation when the tires get replaced I would either have a mis-matched spare or toss an unused tire.
And yes, makes tire rotations a bit easier.

I did it once and only one. It just forces you to buy a 5th matching wheel & matching rim, that otherwise you may more than likely never had to use, and pay for. Now your including another TPMS. All that for maybe 20% more tire life.

    What a waste, never again.

To each their own, if what you do works for you, no reason to change it.

What would you do if you had an un-repairable tire failure at about 50% tread life and had to replace it? Run with one brand new tire and the rest half way? Or replace all the tires?
FWIW, thats almost exactly the way I bought my truck, fronts were about 50% and the rears over 90 due the PO having a sidewall puncture in one tire so he replaced both rears. If it happens to me having an in-rotation matching spare I just swap in on and carry on with life. Buy a used tire for a spare until it’s time to replace all the tires

Vince, fist thing I would do is use my oem spare to get me safely out of danger, and I would replace both 50% tires, so that all 4 are all close to the 90%- 100% tires. I'm not going to worry about 1 tire left with 50% for my $40K Truck.

Not trying to start any arguments about having a TP sensor in the spare 'full-size' tire, just saying that the only benefit of having this 5th sensor is to keep you informed of the tire's air pressure. My Wife's Tacoma and my Tundra's spare tires don't have a TP sensor, so if we decide to go on a long drive, I have to crawl underneath to check the spare tire's air pressure. Now, looking at the spare in her 2023 Tacoma, my 2013 Tundra, and her 2010 RAV4 V6, I can see that the full-size spare in each vehicle are not the exact match to the 4 tires in each of the vehicles.

However, for some reason the spare tire on her 2010 RAV4 looses enough air pressure during the winter months for the "spare" sensor to trigger and store a signal in the TPM computer, while the air pressure in the other 4 tires never drop below preset. Every winter I have to add about 5 pounds to the spare tire, which in turn removes the caution signal in the dash. I am assuming that if one decides to perform a 5-tire rotation (a set of 5 identical tires), the 5th sensor would be a good thing to have.

You get the heck out of here with your logic and critical thinking. There’s no place for that in TW
