I just use kits. One from Walmart said 180° which is the smoke setting temp and high mountain says 200°. Which i had to bump up temp settings to get it warmed up in this cold weather. But then i backed it down to 225° to get the temp prob laying inside to read 200°. I smoked it for 2 hours swapping around the trays at 1hr.

You have better restraint control than I would have if that buck showed up at 20 yards. Now of course if the rules were already explained to me, then I would just grit my teeth and watch him walk by.

Okay, we need details. Is this your "Buddy's" hunting cabin, or a retreat cabin. Either way, is sure as hell beats any place that I've ever slept in while deer hunting. I was in a hunt club one year that had an old house on the property. There were a couple of usable rooms and a kitchen that actually had electricity. The back half of the house was caved in from a huge oak tree falling on it. There was just one old door separating the caved in part from the rest of the house. The one usable room for sleeping had about 8 bunk beds in it. The only problem was at night when you're trying to sleep, the critters were running up and down inside the walls and ceiling. Yeah, it was a little creepy when you were there by yourself. Thats why I slept with my Dan Wesson .357 magnum within arms reach.

Man I grew up hunting and sleeping in a cabin almost to a T exactly like that. Tree on the back side with a door blocking the obvious imminent death half of the house. Bunk beds up front. No shitter, just a folding chair with a toilet seat. Only a water hose out front and a generator for emergencies.

I had some friends in Atlanta that went hunting every year in the upper peninsula of Michigan every year. He showed me some pictures of the "Hunting Cabin" they stayed in. It looked just as nice as the pics you posted. I used to tell them you're staying in the Hilton while you're hunting. I asked if they had man servants to take care of their personal needs, like doing the laundry, cleaning off their hunting boots, and doing the cooking. Yeah, I'm sure they had it rough.

A guy I work with married into a somewhat wealthy family. Anywho...his father in law liked to hunt so he bought 750 acres in Illinois and built a 'hunting shack' on it. I was lucky enough to spend a few nights there.
The inside of the house looks like Bass Pro Shops (he also hunted Africa a few times.)
The land...3 or 4 ponds (one of which might be considered a lake), gated entrance, numerous ladder stands, shooting houses, food plots...all the works.
They have several tractors, side×sides, 4wheelers; they even have a reefer trailer for hanging deer (he owned a large trucking company). This place is only 50 miles from here, I have no idea why someone doesnt live there full-time.

My poor ass scrounges for places to hunt on public land. :anonymous:

But I'm not complaining, I love the areas I hunt, apparently I'm just shitty at it.:anonymous:

I've stayed in a few hunting cabins that keep you nervous at night.

It’s a retreat cabin, him and one of his sons have bought 6 farms within 2 miles of each other for a total of 660 acres.

A few randos from tonight’s hunt. I probably seen 60 deer give or take a few. Probably seen 20-25 bucks but not the bully 8 I was hoping to see.IMG_5958.jpg IMG_5950.jpg IMG_5956.jpg IMG_5949.jpg

WOW!!!! Deer Hunters Fantasy come true. I'm sure that it's managed Property hoping to raise some bruisers for future hunting. Shoot the spikes and Does for Meat, and Nothing else under what, an 8 point or larger? As for that being a retreat cabin, it's more like the Hilton in my opinion, but he dude, I'm happy for you. Not everyone gets an opportunity like this, so brother make the best of it.

But seriously, I'm just yanking your chain. It's a dam fine place, and if they are managing the bucks, there should be some monsters hiding on 660 acres somewhere.

    ^^^This^^^

Sometimes I skip the soap on my T/C Renegade. I use as hot as water as possible, pull the touch hole liner (its stainless), breech end into the bucket of hot water. I use as tight a patch as possible so it draws water into the full length of barrel. Lock gets dropped into the hot water as well. Key is as hot as possible. Drys a lot quicker. Barrel, keep running patches till clean and dry. Lock gets scrubbed with a toothbrush and hit with a bit of compressed air. I may or may not run a lightly oiled patch down. And I mean light, like a drop or two. Prior to loading I'll run a patch with alcohol down and a dry patch or two.

45 years and my T/C still is as good as the day I got it. Unfortunately, the guy behind it ain't.

Yes, it is a very nice set up. As far as our buck management strategy, no bucks under 5 years old and spikes get a pass because they can be future wall hangers. Our general goal is no 8 pointers under 140 inches and any buck with 10 or more points must be 160 inches or bigger. The only exceptions to this rule are mature bucks with inferior genetics, they tend to be bully bucks and will run off the up and comers with potential or a very old buck who is going down hill. As far as extra freezer meat then it’s doe’s only.

This is the realm in which I exist in Texas :anonymous:

but a 140” deer is massive for my land. 120” is a good shooter.

There was a 190 about a decade ago taken on the outfitters land next to me so it can happen

I haven't seen any big bucks around where we moved, I know they are close, I just haven't seen any or gotten pictures of them.

The older I get and after having kids, it's more about letting them shoot and filling the freezer
