In my experience Subarus have the best AWD system on the market. It's really good. The downsides are that they use CVTs and are generally underpowered.

@LarryDangerfield had a brief fling with a Subie Outback Wilderness Edition, so he may have some insights.

Our 2019 Outback we had was a dumpster fire, and required over $4,000 in warranty work. The CVT was going out when I traded it in. Bought it used so your mileage may vary Bill.

The Wilderness has the larger 2.5 engine vs the 2.0 in other versions. I don't know if that helps with power or not. Looks like a hp and tq boost on paper though

Oh there will be some mods all right
They have the bigger engine plus the CVT is actually geared different which gives it a higher tow rating as well as (supposedly) making it more robust.

Indeed, it does have a larger engine than the regular Crosstrek.

    upload_2025-1-9_4-13-16.png

Though, the curb weight of 3300+ lbs still has me feeling that the 182 HP is under powered, especially when it comes in at 5800 RPM. For reference, I had a 2005 Dodge Stratus V6 that was 200 lbs lighter and had 200 HP at 5800 RPM and it felt adequate at best. It was never exciting to drive.

The CVT will no doubt manage it better than the old stratus gearbox, but it's still going to feel underpowered. I live where it's snowy, muddy, and I go on mountain roads where I may need to put my foot down for traction or to rock a vehicle in snow, and CVTs are notoriously bad at that. They will cut power to prevent heat build up because they can damage their belts if they overheat. I mean, hurray it saves itself, but boo it isn't very capable off pavement. Now, if your wife just likes the look and feel of it and has no plans to do fun stuff with it, subies are pretty great.

I have literally no experience with a Crosstrek of any kind but my outback wilderness was pretty peppy and extremely capable off-road so while I'm sure the Crosstrek won't be near as fast I'd like to hope it would be pretty close to as capable since the CVT and all-wheel drive system are almost identical to the outback.

well, KBB says they're the new Toyota, for whatthat's worth.

    https://www.kbb.com/car-news/consumer-reports-subaru-lexus-make-the-most-reliable-cars/

Both of my kids drive late model Imprezas, pretty bare bones, AWD 4 door hatch backs. They've been rock solid. I owned an 86 GL back in day. Think original BRAT, but in a 2 door hatchback. Small car. 5 spd stick with a 1.8. The drivetrain that made Subaru famous. I've owned Tacomas, Troopers, old GMC Jimmy's (the big old full size iteration) Mazda MPV (when it was an actual TRUCK with 4WD and a locker), LOTS of 4 x 4's and have lived my whole life in the snow belt. Without question that Soob was the best 4wd vehicle I've ever owned. Drove into chaos like I was on a snowmobile. Simply unstoppable. No semblemce of that vehicle/drivetrain exists today, however. And in those days, on a quiet day, you could hear them rust.

That's all I got. I'm not a huge fan of the graphics, but that's purely subjective.

    Oh! and, Good morning!

Yeah, the Wilderness Outback had a turbo though. A regular outback is ok, but not anything to write home about. Kinda like a regular impreza is ok, but the WRX is much better because of the turbo addition... and the manual transmission. :burnrubber:

Morning stockers :hattip:getting some decent winter weather finally, winter sports industry really needs it. Still lite and fluffy, leaf blower works great, neighbors are catching on. We liked our Crosstrek, great in the snow, 75k trouble free miles, daughter has it now, we’ll see :fingerscrossed:
