It's going to be quite the week..



Hoping to get thing tore down this weekend and get a bunch done this week.

 

Day 1's progress:





The stock battery tray fought me a good bit.

Tomorrow's goal is getting the controller mounted and the solenoid mounted, then wiring the solenoid to the controller and the controller to the motor.

I received the new harness (going from 36v to 48v) so I'll start on that and getting the pedal box wiring spliced into the harness. Then I'll mount the base of the battery box and figure out where the battery will live (front or back nearest the motor). Thinking the latter.

After that, figuring out the dash layout for the new battery gauge, OTF tuner and new FNR switch.

Excited to get back into it tomorrow.

 

It was a good day 2..



Still have some wiring to clean up, extend and route properly, then, hook up the 12v step down and test the accessories, and finally route the cables for the on the fly tuner and the new battery gauge. I also have a mount coming for the new battery gauge, too.

But it's done. Only hiccup was 2 wires were hooked up backwards on the solenoid.

Got the wiring cleaned up, extended and routed properly. Tested the 12v accessories and they all are working properly. I swapped out the 4ga wires that I used for 2ga. The 4ga was just for testing last night.

Just need to route the wiring for the battery gauge and OTF controller, hook everything up and get out and test it. I'll do that after work today.

Well, things escalated quickly..

Went for a test drive in the golf cart and the noise was still coming from the rear end. So diff. But MAN, the golf cart fucking SCOOTS now. Shit!

Wife's car battery was dead dead so I pulled that and off I went to AutoZone. Some royal purple 5w-30, gasket maker and a pump to fill it up.

Got home and got the wife's car running again. She's happy. Pulled the diff cover on the golf cart and wouldn't you know. Bone dry. Spun it over a dozen times to make sure nothing fell out. Everything is tight. Cleaned up the diff cover seal and the seal on the diff, out the gasket maker on and tightened all the bolts. Letting it cure overnight and I'll fill it in the morning.

Having some fluid in it has to be better than LITERALLY bone fucking dry.

Really honing my skills in the garage with this project...

 

Got the diff filled this morning and took it for a ride around the community. Noise is gone. I guess it just needed fluid. Took about half a quart after I had it jacked up on one side. No leaks.

What a relief.

The neighbors with all the new Icon golf carts stopped and asked me a ton of questions. She may be from 1998, but she turns heads. I guess you can't get the cart street legal if it doesn't do at least 20 or 22. So we never would have been able to get this thing street legal without going with the swap.

Convinced at least 2 neighbors to go with the Navitas AC conversion.

 

Well, I had to remove the diff cover again on the golf cart. I got some incorrect advice on what fluid to use and the amount to fill.

So I got everything removed and put SAE 30 in. I filled it with the cart level on the ground. Fine with me because I had a little bit of rubbing of the gear on the diff cover so I hammered it out a bit more.





I also got the LED battery gauge mount in the mail. It wasn't supposed to come until Monday:

Only complaint is that the kit should include one for how much money you're spending..

I might add a tray in between each fan for smaller hand tools when wheeling the unit around.

Now I can store my 270 awning, scrap pieces of bigger wood and the lowest shelf is staging for projects; for example, I have the wainscoting panels for the remaining pieces of the built ins stored up off the floor. No more tripping.

Next I would probably get some plywood sheets and rip them down to be able to store smaller items.

Then I can get the bikes stored vertically on that wall.

Thinking about adding a USG42 to the arsenal, too. I'm starting to outgrow the smaller drawers on my triple bank and would need to reorganize everything. Part of that means going with foam inserts on a few drawers on the 72.

My wife got me a router for Christmas so I was out in the garage practicing using it and coming up with some templates for some future woodworking projects:

Technically this was once off the rack, but this is when I first got it and after I resto'd

 

Hoist for the RTT showed up:



I ordered some D rings and heavy duty ratchet straps that will be arriving next week. Going to add them in addition to the hoist so the ratchet straps hold the load and not the hoist. I have a 4 pack of 4k rated straps coming. I think 3 will be enough to hold the weight.

I'll need to get the wood supplies for it but I wanted to ask my FIL or neighbor that does residential construction what the best route to go is.

Had a pipe bust outside today due to the "cold". Plumber said that it's pretty common for the glue to freeze, shrink and bust.

How cold is "cold"?

Upper 30's at night and mid to upper 50's during the day. Child's play considering were from where the temps would get into the negatives consistently for weeks at a time. -50 is the coldest I think I ever experienced.

 

I bitch enough about Massachusetts, but I don't think we ever hit negative 50. Man, fuck that shit..

But how did you freeze and bust at upper 30s though?

 

The cold shrunk the pipe glue and the pressure caused the joint to pop. The guy said it's pretty common here if it gets cold enough.

 

ahhh..I've had pipes freeze here but that's due to much lower temps and the stupidity of someone who ran pipe for my bathroom before I lived here. What fool thinks running it right near the access to the outside temps is wise?

 

We learned that our previous owner was a local handyman.

Now, I'm not a smart man, but when the owner/handyman replaced a fluorescent tube bulb with a ballast bypass bulb and didn't remove the ballast and probably wondered why the light never worked again, it gives you a pretty good idea of the quality of the trades in our area..
