    Yeah but that explanation is precisely what will confuse people and make them think number of teeths is what makes the ratio. Its not, Ratio comes from difference in circumference of two circles. The exact middle of where gears mesh is where two circumferences meet.

    No its not. The diameter is fixed. an 8" ring gear can not be made larger, and fit the housing. Therefore, more teeth are cut into it to get the required ratio. In many cases, the pinion size can be changed a little bit too.

    No it doesn't with respect to ring and pinion gears. It's the number of teeth. You cannot change the diameter of the ring. It's a constant. You have to change the number of teeth. The teeth are what govern the distant the gears move in relation to each other. It's the same theory that governs a screw. A fine thread screw will travel less that a coarse thread screw per revolution.

    So I read on this post that you cant put a 4.10 from a 4 banger in a front diff of a TRD Off Road because it wont fit? I was about to buy a 4 banger 4.10 front diff. Please let me know if this is the case or not.

    Only if one wheel spins on an unlocked axle. If the locked axle spun nothing would happen.

    Right there is where I read it...

    I wanted to do 295/70/R17 which is actually 33.5" in place of 265 Rugged TRails that are 29.5" actual. THe exact perfect gearing for a 3.73 is 4.10 for that tire size change. That meant a 4.10 8" (which a friend will give me for free) and a 4.10 I need to source from the front of a 4x4 4 banger 2nd Gen. Or so I thought...

    You actually normally need the whole 4.10 setup.

    Ok what if you grind all the teeths from both Ring and pinion and just allow flat surfaces to contact. What ratio that would be since you would have then 0 teeth on pinion and 0 teeth on ring ?

    No. You can use the 4.10 gears from the 2.7 4x4 as a replacement to the 3.73's of the V6. gear swap only. no need to swap front diffs.

    I am pretty sure you can not just swap factory R&P thats why I quoted ECGS website. They have 4.56 that will "fit" for you to keep your 3.73 diff. Thats why we even have two ARB lockers for front one for 3.73
    $1,114 RD121 Air Locking Differential
    RD121 and one for 3.90 and up RD111

    Well if you grinded 3.73 set that would still be 3.73 even with no teeths. It would not transfer much torque but the ratio would stay the same :D

    Again with no teeth on pinion and ring how many rotations of pinion would take to rotate ring ?
    You dont need teeths to transfer force from one gear to another. So how many rotations (aka ratio) will take?

    You really dont get it do you? If htere are no teeth, the different diameter of the 2 devices is going to dictate the ratio, much like a golf ball turning a basket ball. However, that doesnt transfer much force to move an object, does it? Therefore, you need the teeth on a gear set. THOSE dictate the ratio in an axel. a 4 foot diameter ring ger with 51 teeth and a 4" pinion with 9 teeth, is going to have the same ratio as an 9" ring gear with 51 teeth, and a 2" pinion with 9 teeth.
