I wouldn't think so, thin aluminum at 120mph hitting a 250g piece of plastic. Hence why it wasn't substantial enough to alert the pilots.

The post there raises an the point that a drone flown into TFR may reject further control from its pilot, which "could" create a new hazard. Of course, the obvious solution is for the pilot to understand airspace restrictions and stay away from them in the first place.

A bad situation no matter how it happened, though. Hopefully they can get the plane back in the air quickly, and also talk to the drone pilot and prosecute them accordingly if they were in the wrong.

 

Sigh... reading farther into that post has a bunch of people suggesting ways to subvert the automatic TFR enforcement. Unclear if they actually work, but still...

Who knows how accurate that is. I have the small drone that does not require licensing but it still restricts me to 400ft or whatever it is. I know friends whose drones seem to be unrestricted on altitude with the same license so I'm not sure how accurate some of the things are. I would think he has the same restrictions but his drone seems ok to do it so maybe an older drone doesn't have the same knowledge?

That said I know several commercial drone operators where active in the area, all those drone shots we've seen of the fires? Well unless the FAA gave them permission for that to then sell to the networks, well I think that's an issue. Especially since commercial drone pilots have a much more strenuous testing and further drone operation requirements and would know better.

You would think in the aftermath of this there might be some new building codes for minimum building separation or something. Being that close together when it's hard to stop it. I understand why insurance companies didn't want to insure there, but I don't understand why they didn't just up their rates like crazy vs dropping them.

Idk it's a small data point but it made me realize there is another benefit to renting again.

 

My reference to "modern" drones was intentional. I know my friend's DJI has gone into autopilot for being too close to a no-fly zone, but I doubt older drones do, and I don't even know if all current ones do.

That's a world I don't know anything about--you're saying that any monetization of drone footage must be approved by the FAA? Or that only a commercial flight can be monetized, and commercial flights require FAA licenses/permits? Something like that?

 

Chicago has some experience here. There are virtually no wooden structures in the city center. They were all wiped out in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and the structures built to replace them were mostly brick.

I'm not saying Chicago's building practices would have dramatically changed things in LA, but there's precedent for reform of codes and standards after a catastrophic event.

 

I assume there was a flight restriction over the fires so they weren’t having to constantly request new headings from ATC. Although I did see regular commercial flights passing near there too.

 

I think home prices in Cali are about to plummet like they are in Florida with all the insurers pulling out.
