Copied from the build thread. Solution for 4wd guys who don't want to carry a full set of spare CVs or don't want to spend the cash.

Doubt I'm the first person to do this, but I can't say I've seen it done before either.

    Preface:
Between buying new OEM CVs and extended axleshafts from total chaos, a spare set of long travel CV assemblies to carry on trips is in the $1,500 arena. I may go that route in the future, but with a lot left to do on the truck, that 1.5k is going elsewhere for the time being.

Until I decide to buy/build a spare set of axles, I made a way to easily keep driving if I blow one or both CVs.

Using my old, worn out CVs that I used to carry for mid travel spares, I cut the inner and outer joint housings off close the the seals. These are now super small and relatively lightweight, especially compared to an entire axle assembly. The inner one will keep fluid in the diff, and the outer will keep the wheel bearing together.
I drove around with these in for the last two days and they worked great. So now I'm going to cut down the housings from the other old CV so I have two sets for myself, or the ability to use one for me and loan the other set out if me and a buddy both get stupid on the same trip.

Now just weld a nut to the center of the inner for a slide hammer when you get home and you’re ballin!

Spliced some CV pullers from some spare winch line I had laying around a while back. Cinch end tightens on the backside of the joint between it and the diff. Loop with the abrasion guard goes around the end of your 4 lb sledge. One good swing and it pops right out.

I have no idea what it is but I broke one of these after around 30 mins with a 10lb sledge on my passenger inner cv stub, had to go back to pry bars to finally get it out.

Only thing that makes sense to me is the jack shaft is marred up somehow and grips the inner splines way too tight. CV and just an inner stub from my 2wd kit both get stuck.

My plan was to weld chain links inside my stubs so I can just run a cable through there and really go to town on it, but I haven’t used them in a while so it is low on my project list.

+1 for the cut off stubs though, gotta find creative ways to keep spare parts weight down when you beat on ifs trucks haha

Yeah, something is definitely off. Hammer sling has always been an easy and fast way for me on multiple vehicles.

    Are both sides tough?

No just passenger. It was a brand new oem jackshaft maybe 16 months ago? But I don’t remember it being this bad at first so I’m curious if the splines are twisted somehow.

previous 3 jackshafts were not this bad.

Great idea and clean work. I’ve heard of similar solutions but never seen anyone cut them down this way.

probably something I should do but would need an extra crappy axel. Anyone got one laying around they want to get ride of?

Has anybody ever fit a 3rd seat in their access cabs? It seems super tight but people with rangers do it, so it gives me hope (when I cage it)
