Depends on what you consider “premium”. If you need to jump dunes in Dakar, that’s a whole different story, and the $150 Eibachs in the OP don’t qualify.

I put 5100s on my Frontier. The roads I drive haven’t changed. The Bilsteins on my OR feel just as good.

Had Eibachs on my G2 Tundra, they were fantastic on and off road! I was hoping the TRD Bilsteins would have been similar. They were close on rough gravel roads and on pavement, but off road at low and moderate speeds they were definitely not what I expected. Installed JRI’s and they are a game changer. Definitely not dune jumping expectations either way:rofl:

Bilstein damps differently (digressive instead of most makers who are progressive or linear). Damping is more aggressive up front with slower shock travel. Better for handling and less body roll, but can feel firm or even harsh on bigger bumps (speed bumps or pot holes). As washboards keep coming, the initial damping is done so it feels a little smoother.

IIRC, Eibach uses a linear rate. Softer in the initial hit but a little less controlled or even a little bouncy because it allows faster initial travel. Softer ride overall.

TRD bilsteins are trash, as you noticed. Super soft and an extremely skinny shock. I'm honestly surprised bilstein has put their name on them all of these years. Buying a set of bilstein 5100, 6112 or B8 series will give you WAY more dampening. The 5100 are comparable to entry level Eibach shocks. Almost anything is better than a stock off road/sport/sr5 Tacoma shock.

You’re assuming the factory OF shocks are better than the eibachs..?

I just wanna level the front without doing a spacer

Nope, and I'm not assuming the Eibachs are better than the Bilsteins that come on the truck.

That makes sense, and a good reason for the swap. Using the clip positions changes the ride quality.

Historically on all previous generations, the stock OF stocks are not as good as aftermarket 2” bilsteins or eibachs. The ride quality is the same if not slightly better but most opt for it for the lift aspect

True. Previous versions used 36mm valves - more in line with Bilstein’s B4 (OEM replacement) series.

The 4G Tacoma has new Bilsteins with 46mm valves, like the B6 (4600) or B8 (5100).

Also historically, folks that use the clip settings only to add front end lift, find the ride harder than they want.

My Eibach adjustable coilovers on my 24 4runner sucked, very floaty on the highway, the oem with spacers felt better. I’ve owned a few+ Tacomas & 4Runner’s, all lifted, the Eibach’s were the worst I’ve ever encountered.

Nice. You going to leave it on the lowest ring, or bump it up one? 3/4" seems about right, and shouldn't affect the ride drastically.

Just got them bitches on. I got it set at the 3rd 1.75” notch. Taking it for a little spin before I get an alignment.

    A few notes…
The bump stop is inside bottom of the top plate.
On all these new TGNF frames, you want to loosen all bolts on the sway bar, BOTH sides… It’s a lot easier to work on.
I’m running a decked drawer with tools prob 300lbs on stock suspension… Have a 1” peak design rear spacer I might add later

Fresh of the alignment rack.. It drives like a bilstein 5100, which is not a surprise. Glad I did the 3rd notch. Tires are 285/70/17 rubitreks on method 17x8 +25mm

Prob gonna change suspension again in the summer. These little shocks can’t handle extra weight and I’ve been eyeing the C4 bumpers

The coilover lift?? It’s the same shock as the cheaper one. Same 46mm piston per description. I’m not looking to spend that much and honestly if I was, I’d go with the Dobinson kit for the price

Burned through a whole tank of gas driving around with them… Im happy with them for the price. It rides similar to stock but taller.

I’m gonna leave the rear alone for now. I have the eibach shocks on with factory springs but timbren rear bumps. I also have 300lbs in the rear with decked drawers and tools.

I had dobinsons on my 4runnner. They were fine. I don't think the cheaper dobinsons would be an upgrade over the stock OR other than a lift. They did rust very quickly as well.
