The 3rd gens could be bought with a pretty good discount before covid as well. I was over 10% off msrp when I bought my 2019 Off Road long bed with tech package.

I feel that soon, the industry will discover that they've run out of people willing to sign up for a $60K-$80K+ vehicle commitment. It's just not sustainable. I wish they'd offer some stripped down version of a Land Cruiser with mostly '80's & '90's tech. Hand-crank windows, button and slide climate control, basic tech. Toyotas last a long time. I don't have to always have the newest of the new. I'd be happy with an older well maintained yota.

Yessir, enough reason people "cashed in" their base model sport or OR for msrp after driving it for 2 years and paying 5-6k less than msrp to begin with.

I’m also curious about the new Scout (VW owned brand).

That said, all the current EV SUV’s and pickups use the same “skateboard” design with the entire floor being battery cells. I’m assuming VW is designing the new Scout using this same layout.

While this design has benefits of keeping the weight low for good handling, it has the risk of locating the expensive batteries in a location where they can be damaged. Again, I reference Hertz’s negative experience with EV’s that require expensive repairs even with minor accidents. (To be fair, it isn’t just the battery pack that is causing Hertz to reduce their EV fleet, it is also the large molded body panels that are expensive to replace).

I’m sure this design if fine for carefully driven on-road use only vehicles, but off-road? I’m just not sure.

Then again, I don’t think we’ll see many Hummer’s in the woods (or Scouts, or Rivians) any time soon.

I didn’t read all 5 pages of responses but I can’t find where the OP has been back to answer the questions.
I USED Tacomas for work trucks in Forestry in the southern states, two companies with different POV programs. Lots of miles and a third of them in the bush. I was vetting middle age stands for fertilization so roads were terrible. Then I was expected to trade in every 4 years.
I like a small truck. I used a Ranger for years in Coastal Washington. I replaced it with a 2013 Tacoma and had a ‘17& now a ‘22. I’ve only ever did the brake pads once on the 2nd gen. My colleagues almost always bought brand x even Tundra’s. Always paid way more than me. And NEVER, EVER, did better than I did on trade in.
Oh let me tell you about the last time I got an air bubble in my hydraulic clutch line in that last Ranger in the middle of nowhere sometime….
If you have to trade, get another Taco!

Yes, excited about the new 4th gen.

Prolly pull the trigger late in 25 or in 26.

If Toyota ever makes the 4-WD extra cab available, in abundance.

During the launch of the 4th gen Toyota announced something like 8 different trims or configurations.

What good is 8 different trims if you can not find the 1 you want?

Dealerships have been sitting on some of the same double cabs for 6 months.

Yep. I’ve contacted several dealers in the area, letting them know I want an extra cab 4wd SR5, almost daily they email me with double cab trucks. One said, they have no 4wd SR5 extra cabs in sight.

Would love to get TRD, Trail Hunter, etc. extra cab, but it’s not in the cards.

Extra cab 6-foot bed or nothing. I can’t work with or sleep in a short bed.

Nope. My 2017 TRD Off-road DCSB runs like a champ with 120K miles. Call me old fashioned or just plain ignorant, but I like the 3.5 six and would never trade for a four. In fact, if I ever buy another truck, which is unlikely with the skyrocketing sticker prices, it would most likely be a full sized American product.

In the past a SR5 access cab was easier to find than an offroad or sport AC, I think the SR5 was easier to find at the dealer over an SR AC. Maybe that will be the case moving forward.

I wouldn't mind compromising up to a heavily discounted DCLB if I needed a truck right away, but I don't and a DC isn't what I want.

    I don't want 90k luxury 1/2 ton either.

That was intended as a joke. You will have to grow a thicker skin to be in TW, and you will need to recognize jokes better. Oy vey ...

I think I will exercise the "ignore member" clause now ...

I'm actually considering a 4th gen. I'm just shy of 60,000 miles on my 2020 which has served me really well. However I moved to a new home at an even higher elevation (8,000ft) and the gear hunting/lack of power is much more noticeable. It's really frustrating me on long drives (1-3 hours one way), which I usually do at least once a week.

While the price of the new gens is high I think I could get a decent amount for my 3rd gen and hopefully ask to pay less then MSRP on a 4th gen. I'd only go for the iForce Max at this point however. Also, I don't see prices ever coming down for new vehicles, so the 2024 will be the cheapest (new) 4th gen we ever see. I'd be paying cash too, never financing a vehicle.

Edit: and yes I have an OTT tune and have considered regearing to 5.29s. Just have heard a lot of mixed reviews on 5.29's actually solving the gear hunting issue, and I'm not sure I want to throw more time/money into fixing something that I can't.

Get what you want and I wish you the best of luck with it. In the end, I still think a Toyota is the best product available.

Likewise. Been cross shopping a ZR2 and Ranger Raptor too, but there is just something about Toyota's.

I'd bank all the money I wasn't paying for a new truck and take my chances. There's a lot of people on here that have over 300K on a 3rd gen. The longer I have a truck the more I like it; I'm going to drive mine till the wheels fall off. I'm also not a Toyota/Tacoma tourist, like a lot of people on this forum.
