Anyone know of a way to put one on? Is it just a program upgrade or an actual chip that you need to install?

After high centering my truck that one time, and not being able to engage the locker, I realized that an LSD would have been perfect at that time.

Whatta ya mean by electric LSD?

Are you referring to the AUTO LSD that uses the 'brakes' (the 09's have it)?
If yes - you're probably better off trading your truck in and buying an 09.

If you're truely high centered with all 4 tires off the ground - the only thing that'll help you is a WINCH or a tow strap and a buddy.

I had the left rear tire on the road, the rest of the tires were buried in snow. I wasn't too high centered, but I knew the right tires were eating all my torque up and spinning like mad.

And yes, I mean the Auto LSD. And I don't want an 09. I like my 07 quite nicely. Better access cab back seats as far as I'm concerned.

You'd have to be there to see what I mean. It would have helped if I had it in that cuffuffle.

The Auto LSD feature has been available with the optional VSC/TRAC package on selected Tacoma models since the 2005 model year.

Sorry - you're wrong about the VSC/TRAC and Auto LSD part, and I've got the factory documentation to prove it.

The VSC/TRAC system (including the 'Auto LSD') was first offered as an option in the 2004 model year on V6 PreRunner and 4X4 XtraCabs and Double Cabs. It's pretty rare to find a 2004 Tacoma with this system, but they're out there.

The VSC/TRAC system (including the 'Auto LSD' in some bundled packages) was consistently offered on Tacomas from that point onward (through today).

Starting with the 2005 model year, the mechanical (i.e., 'real') LSD previously only available as an accessory or aftermarket add-on began to be offered as factory equipment with certain option packages (and standard on the X-Runner only).

What changed in 2009 was that the mechanical (i.e., 'real') LSD's previously (and separately) available since 2005 were discontinued, leaving only the 'Auto LSD' (the mislabeled brake-control gizmo) as the only factory 'limited slip' feature.

None of this is answering my original question. Can an AUTO LSD be added easily, or am I borked?

    No - you're borked ...

The Auto LSD is basically a controller tied into your brake system. It manipulates the brakes to simulate the effect of a mechanical (real) LSD negotiating power between wheels to limit the amount of relative 'slip'.

I've been curious abou this for a while. I haven't found anyone say "no." Most people have no idea on what would be required to make our trucks have the Auto LSD. I wouldn't be surprised to find that it is something as simple as an additional module and then you have the Auto LSD.

I know what an LSD is. That's why I want one. Now you say it isn't possible. Explain your rational.

This is what I was thinking. To me, I can't see it being anything huge, since it is just tied into the brake controller.

Yeah, it's a lot more confusing than it ought to be - mainly because Toyota somehow decided it was a bright idea to call this brake manipulation feature an 'LSD'. It's probably more accurate to call it a variant of the ABS notion.

The part that's really confused me since 2005 (at least through the 2008 model year) is whether the Auto LSD could be obtained on a Tacoma equipped with the real LSD, and if so - how the **** did the two mechanisms interact with each other. None of the 2005 - 2008 spec or options documentation says these 2 features are mutually exclusive, but I've never seen anyone on any of the Taco-related forums I frequent mention having both.

If you know what an LSD is, then you'd know that the so-called 'Auto LSD' isn't one ...

You asked if the 'Auto LSD' (a slip-limiting brake manipulator) can be easily added, not whether an LSD (a limited slip differential) can be added easily. You'd need the VSC/TRAC apparatus to have the 'Auto LSD'.

If you want a real mechanical LSD, just install a Detroit TrueTrac.

I highly doubt the Auto LSD feature can be added easily or even CHEAPLY.

Although, I don't know for sure - there's A LOT of computer/ECU programming involved with the whole system interacting with just about everything (brakes, wheel speed sensors, and gawd knows what else).

Sure - anything is possible. How much is it actually worth to you?
It'd probably require a small loan to have it all installed.

You already have the TRD Locker..... Put an ARB locker in the front. Having front/rear lockers would be MUCH better than any auto LSD system for offroading.

Got a rear locker, can't go that route.

I've heard that people with not much experience with lockers shouldn't put a front locker in. Otherwise bad things happen.

Who or what is the determining factor that dictates when you have enough experience to get a front locker?

Regardless of how much offroad experience you have - putting lockers in (front or rear) is a totally NEW ball game. You have to learn as you use 'em. Having lockers can change everything about how the truck acts in situations.
Getting an ARB (or other selectable locker) is the best thing. You engage it when you need it.

If there's two things I could say about using (espcially front lockers) - is:
LIGHT ON THE GAS!!! Too much throttle can bust things up.
DON'T PUSH IT!! If your'e trying to move and the truck doesn't move - don't push it. There could be many reasons why the truck isn't moving. All the thoughts running through my head right now is enough to start a totally new thread (so I'll shut up now). :D

KBB is a good source for pricing estimates, but their listings (even in the pre-computerized days) were never a good reflection of actual equipment options year-by-year.
