Good morning. Time to install a new soundcard in the PC. I looked at buying a new PC, anticipating more failures down the road, but the cost is steep and there are no real discounts. My existing PC takes DDR4 memory, and all the new PCs are DDR5. The cost to upgrade memory, after-market costs, is around $150. Think I will make do with this PC for an under $50 repair.

    Up and Adam or atom!

Decision day from dog rescue place. We are waiting.

Church then another day of shyte football. Terrible games yesterday. Sloppy, ugly, only rescued by some great defensive stands. Of course I can't sit through entire games. Today I need to spray for Lady Bugs (Asian type) it's been warm, so here we are. Nothing toxic YET. I use mint and alcohol spray in all the powered vent lines (baffrooms, washroom, kitchen, halls). They stay out, but the effect only lasts 3-6 months! Later I get all toxic on them OUTSIDE the house.

What does that mean? Are you having to wait to adopt a dog? Why? Does the rescue place have a bunch of questions that need to be answered appropriately or you are denied?

    Yes.

Fill out an online application during the week, your qualifications (as in previous pets, how you train and treat dogs), yard size, background, which dog you prefer etc. Sunday the shelter decides who gets the dog. We hope we are first in line. But if not, life goes on.

I've toured some shelters like that... and to be honest, I'm not impressed. I think they have some very questionable practices. While they are acting like they are exclusive clubs and insisting people meet their criteria... the local county shelter has great dogs being euthanized for lack of people adopting.

We went to check out the Best Friends animal sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, which I think is the largest sanctuary there is. They have impressive facilities and a mass of volunteers that avoid questions. They've all been schooled to avoid giving out any real information, but also to cultivate donations. There are animals there that live their entire lives without being adopted because the sanctuary doesn't make money by finding homes for animals. We went, expecting to stay in their RV camp, and they refused us a spot even though they had several open... "Because we only allow Motor Coaches"... which translates to exclusivity for people with a lot of obvious money that want to write big checks.

Maybe your place is different and I'm embittered by my experiences with the various places I've investigated. In the mean time, if you want a dog please consider a trip to the county shelter. They don't have a line of people competing for a dog that will be euthanized if it's not adopted in three days.

This place IS different. This place is not exclusive, they just want to minimize "returns" and want good homes for the dogs - in fact, my wife worried the other way, why not do a background check on the people! So I'm not exactly sure how you can say "like that", when you don't know the place. I do however get what you are saying. I know you mean well - and we have zero idea if there is a line of people for this dog. She has been there since before Christmas and no takers, so maybe not a waiting list - we simply don't know.

We've been checking the county shelter - our main criteria is good with cats and young kid - grand kids - friendly and dog size (under 60 pounds), disposition and nothing yet in 3+ months.

Side note: I never heard of anything like Best Friends animal sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. We always get shelter rescue pets, county or charity. Our cats same over the years. Some were difficult - one cat ran away for good, never saw again - one neurotic dog would just attack other larger dogs to her detriment, she was work 24/7. But we are good owners, dogs need training, working and not left alone. My last dog lived 17 years, he was a great dog, taken the same day from a multi-party rescue event.

Anyway, seriously - thanks for the concerns. The fact that you typed that out means you are sincere.

Best Friends is an awesome place. It is sanctuary to lots of different critters, dogs, cats, horses, farm animals etc. It’s also one of our favorite charities, we write them a substantial check every year. We go to Utah every year and always visit Best Friends when there. They also have a pet cemetery called Angels Rest there where 5 of our pets are. If you are ever in Utah you should visit Best Friends and do one of their tours, it’s fascinating and you’ll leave with good feelings. Sorry Travir that your experience wasn’t the greatest but we’ve never had a negative experience there.

Do you know what their turn-over rates are? How many animals coming in and how many are rehomed? Have you tried adopting from them?
I have visited and they avoided my questions.
I'm not saying adoption doesn't happen, but the amount of time an animal spends waiting to be adopted is more than a little questionable, considering how many people are seeking to adopt. And in the meantime the animals they aren't finding homes for are taking up space that could be filled with animals that are being euthanized.
It's a tough deal. Our local shelter gets 145 cats and 45 dogs every three months... and on average only two dogs get adopted. As an average all the cats are killed and 43 of the dogs.

Not going to debate this here. Suffice it to say they are a great place. They are no kill and rescue lots of critters. And lots are adopted, a friend of ours in Utah has adopted 3 cats from there. Also keep in mind they are in Kanab Ut. Which is the middle of nowhere other than Best Frirnds ain’t much there to attract people there. Because of location adoption is some what challenging. A person either has to drive long distances or adoptees are shipped or flown to their new forever homes. But what ever we can agree to disagree.
Oh and by the way our local shelter in 100”% no kill. Best Friends has been instrumental in getting 100’s of shelters across the US to be no kill and they continue working to get 100% to be no kill.

To keep it positive I am glad us geezers lean towards pet adoption.

The only guilt I carry is us seeking a puppy this time. Puppies found in a field near Bakersfield but puppy vs adult dog nevertheless per my wife’s need to train something young. Finally she’s finished with me. Hahahaha

Yes, they put on a good face and they do it well. And people are happy to donate and it makes them feel good.

My problem is that I run the numbers and they don't add up. Whether it really matters to the animal problem or not is probably not important. In the end the same results, I'm pretty sure.
