Yeah. I've read through several threads. I realize there's limitations of the head unit, but it would be great to get something better, even if not perfect. Crutchfield has a solid return policy, so I may give it a go. I'm not an electrical wizard, so that's probably what's stopping me (more than cost). Any members good with electrical that are in the Raleigh area? I'd be glad to buy it if someone's willing to help install.

 

I have a WC6600NEX head unit (i.e., a substantial upgrade over stock) and upgraded the camera. It was barely an upgrade. I suspect the limitation here is just the fact that it's over RCA. I disassembled my Volvo's rear camera and it's on a proprietary connector that is pinned out like USB. I couldn't find a head unit that took in anything other than RCA.

Yeah, ultimately most head units can only do 1280x720. I think the stock head unit is 800x420. I tried the Optix TLP150HDW which is a CCD sensor with 1280x720 and did not find it to be a substantial upgrade over stock. I'm not sure you'll be able to do any better than that setup on a Tacoma.

It's more complicated if you have the multi-terrain monitor package aka 360 as it has CAN-BUS connectivity. This thread has some good notes on wiring:

I have a 2017 taco. I don’t like the quality on the backup camera as well. I installed a front camera last month into the carabc module and it’s way better than the oem camera. I’ve seen a yt video upgrading the camera and moving it, it was just plug and play. I am wondering if anyone had done that and if it improved the quality with a different camera.

 

Also wondering this.. I’ve got a Sony head unit that really shows how terrible the cameras are

 

Sorry, but I have not read every single post where someone may have already pointed out the issue with back up camera display resolutions. But, I am in the process of upgrading to a new head unit, and my installer just pointed out a piece of info that was a revelation to me.

don’t waste money on buying a more expensive camera thinking you are going to get a nicer display on the head unit. The head unit I am buying is in the $400 range — pioneer. The rear head unit Video input is composite RCA (Not component). Composite will only carry a 480 signal. For curiosity, I checked a pioneer $800 head unit and the video video input is still composite.

unless you are going to spend the money to get what I would call a really expensive head unit, buying a higher resolution camera gets you absolutely nowhere.

The advertised screen resolution for head usage will look way nicer than the resolution shown on the screen for the camera video.

so, you need to know how your head unit accepts the video cable. Don’t go looking for a camera resolution beyond your head units video input capability. Your camera concern then becomes quality of construction and long-term durability reputation. Find out what a professional installer in your area uses and then go from there because they don’t want these cameras coming back into their shop with complaints.

A zillion dollar camera is going to look the same on the head display as the stock camera.

here’s my custom plug and play 1080p 170 degree rear view camera. Still working to get it perfect yet this is about 90% completed.

this is on an aftermarket headunit and I’ve already upgraded the front camera. All through alibaba parts so not breaking any banks.

 

If this works please let me know… I have a joying head unit and would like to upgrade the backup camera. I took apart the tailgate today and wondered why anyone hadn’t come up with this yet

 

it works. Yet woking to align it and perfect it. Trying to get someone to 3d print the mount to make it 100% I’ll upload photos later this week of before and after.

here’s the front I’ve worked so far. yet this is easier as it’s stand alone rather than mounted on factory bracket

give me some time and I’ll update the post. Trying to make them as cheap and as plug and play as possible.

 

My 2018 backup camera is just like all the others. It's terrible for backing up at night (night mode) so I simply turn off my headlights to back up and it goes into day mode...makes a world of difference.

 

Following because I recently upgraded my head unit to the aucar 13.8" tesla style unit, and the video quality is horrendous. The stock screen looked like 4k compared to what it is now. Lol.

Has anyone found a plug and play reverse cam with no grid display for 3rd gen Tacoma. I installed the Cidava 13" & I like it's grid better. I have found that the OEM cam has grid built into camera. So I am looking for a camera that doesn't have them or can be turned off by disconnecting a wire.

 

Honestly I've been considering the wolfbox for a while now. I got the fitcamx instead. But I'm still thinking about the wolfbox. For one, the resolution on my new unit is terrible. Two, the oem rear view blocks a ton of my view being tall and it annoys me every time I drive. I'm wondering if you'd get a bit more adjustability with the wolfbox. But, it is bigger in size too tho so I'm torn..

Their 2.5k backup camera itself is cheap. I wonder if it could be re-wired to fit the coax, or a 3.5mm to coax adapter?

 

Ended up getting it plug and play. Yet need to work on mounting.

Only thing that didn’t happen was the guidance lines and could be do to how it’s wired? Yet cutting the green wire or not made no difference.

this is also a 170 wide angle. So tucked inside the tailgate handle it sees too wide and shows up.

 

This is really neat. Did you find a 1080p camera with stock mount or did you buy the camera and mount separate?

Also, any noticable gap after install?
