Kinda hoping Kia / Hundai grabs them before Tata does.

It would absolutely spell the end for the Z-Car but then it doesn't even keep up with the Supra, Camaro, Mustang any more so what's the point. It's a C-List Sports Car at best.

i wish it was 20 gallons.

nope, it's not going to get better - it's a toyota thing. the 3rd gen is the same way, but i guess people don't notice it as much because it is a 21.1 gallon tank, so when it is reading zero miles remaining, a fill-up is around 18.5 gallons, which feels more normal.

my wife routinely drives her highlander to work and back (36 miles round trip) after the range hits zero.

I've calculated my truck to run 11.8MPG or 248 miles to a tank. This is very bad. 2007 Taco V6 4x4 Double Cab with 2 inch lift and Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac
285/75/R16. is this simply because my lift and tire size that it is this bad or does this indicate an actual issue with my vehicle. Help please.

The 2nd gen folks can probably give you better insight. You might ask the mods to move your thread to

Do that many folks seriously not read the manual for one of the most expensive and most used purchases in their life?

Toyota calls out on page 546.
The low fuel light comes on when remaining fuel is approximately 2.7 gal. (10.4 L, 2.3 lmp. gal.) or less.
This is also the set point that Miles to go zero uses.

So figure all your dash calculations in the vehicle are running from 15.5gal (59.6L) +/-

So let's say you average 17mpg, then you have about 51miles until you run dry. However, acceleration from stop usually send mpg down to low single digits, and angle of road can impact ability to get at those "last sips", and let's not even go into when you're towing our hauling at weight.
When MTG reports zero and you're low fuel comes on, it's reasonable, but not absolute, that you can stretch another 25-30mi (40-50km) before you go from risky to really risky.

I'm befuddled why so much energy is put into this. Fill up when the light comes on or you're close. Why play such a game with true zero unless you're road tripping and trying to calculate if you stop now or can safely make it to the next exit with a gas station?

My 20y old Toyota (V6, F4WD) has a 19.2 tank, and before the ethanol blend requirements would nail 20.5mpg in mixed driving. After blending became the standard, it dropped to 17.8mpg. this took my average range from 330mi to 300mi (the range here is when I now said I must fill up at my next opportunity and me tracking how many miles beyond the light tripping on I went).

My EPA rating in this truck is 23-24 and I'm seeing about a 19.5mpg average so far this fall/winter. So I'm still touching/crossing the same ~300mi range between refuelling under normal driving conditions, even if the tank is a gallon smaller than my prior vehicle. A 10 min fill up every 2.5+3h on a road trip is something your body and back will appreciate anyway.

    DEFINITELY NEEDS LARGER TANK!!!!!!

Using the calculator, the best with our 2024 Limited so far is 19.14 mpg (3k miles so far)
This is just to and from work with 10 miles @ 62 mph and 32 miles @ 76 mph. 1 stop sign and 1 red light, with all flat land (Northeast Louisiana).

Removed front air dam and added VERY nice bed cover yesterday and hope to see better.

2018 Explorer Limited with 207k miles was getting +23mpg on same exact trip. COME ON TOYOTA

Range on Explorer was over 400 miles

How much are consumers willing to pay for a larger tank? The answer I suspect is $0 - so that’s what Toyota will pay to work on the issue. Should it have a bigger tank? Yeah.

If Toyota offered a warrantied oem 25-30g tank it would be my next upgrade, maybe the tundra fuel tank fits since its the same platform?

Try explaining to her about cost of replacing fuel injectors EARLY , because of all the garbage they picked up at bottom of tank…….

she’s saving NOTHING driving to Empty……

So you want them to put a bigger tank on the truck? What if that meant your mpg was 10mpg? So now you lose but would you still whine saying it needs to be bigger still?

Outside of full sized pickups with extended range tanks, most general vehicles are sized for 250-350 mile ranges, as that's tested over and over to be the sweet spot.

If it's such a big deal to you pressure for better fuel efficiency. Or make that a higher property in your vehicle selection.

Am I disappointed in the efficiency I'm seeing compared to what they marketed? Absolutely. Esp given my last Toyota was dead-on until ethenol entered the mix. Am I loosing sleep over a low fuel light at 290mi? No.
