My version of the seatbelt chime bypass (keep blinker sounds)

I'd like to preface this by saying I always wear my seatbelt when going anywhere other than backing up in my driveway or around the corner to the mailbox, and you should too. But this thing is annoying the way it beeps at you the second it turns on.

I saw some people were removing the speaker behind the gauges but I wanted to keep my blinker sounds. So on my 2022 Tacoma SR I cut the wire that goes to the seatbelt under the seat and put a 1k ohm 1/2W resistor on the circuit. I originally thought I could just connect the two wires together and call it a day but the BCM reads the resistance and looks for around 1k ohms (tested with a multimeter) to indicate the seatbelt is buckled.

So that's it, a 1k ohm resistor and some heatshrink tubing and no more chime. IMG_1770.jpg IMG_1771.jpg

No need to do that when you can use Techstream or Carista to disable the chime.

For me, the reason I chose this over that was cost.

I heard you can plug the seatbelt in before you sit but of course this is not recommended :homer:

The cost for Carista is not very prohibitive. I think it’s an initial purchase of a single for $10-20 and then one month of service so you can make your change. Then nothing once you cancel after changes are made.

When I used it they gave you a free month, so you just make your changes then cancel.

Yep, i have used these for years and yes best part is makes buckling seat belt easier, since it is higher than the factory one, especially for all you that live in cold country and have a jacket on when trying to find the slot.

I, in my 10 minutes of research, did not discover that haha. That sounds like a great option,

Exactly! It is great with the winter jacket. And made it easier for my father in law to buckle himself. He does not have dexterity in his hands he used to have.

Interesting. Is it safe to use in case of an accident tho?
One thing I miss about my 09 I was able to disable the chime.

It is nice. I ride in my brother's Tundra sometimes and occasionally will end up in a situation parked or low speed with the belt off and that chime is awful. It's been a nice quiet nearly 3 years in my truck. The light still blinks which doesn't bother me, I consider that a helpful reminder at worst. But the chime had to go.

Exactly. I got a dog buckler so it does double duty. When I'm cruising dirt roads at 15 mph with my
Nikon and 100/400mm lens in hand I can quickly get out of the truck, take some shots of whatever,
and get back in without messing with the whole seatbelt mess. Best money I've spent in the last decade.

I'm pretty sure it is. I didn't mess with the airbags or anything (the yellow wires), it just thinks you're buckled so everything should work as intended if you crash. And hopefully you're actually wearing the seatbelt if that happens.

I have had to break very quickly for people turning on front of me, and it held up.
