A750 Automatic Transmission Pan w/ Dipstick Upgrade

Not that I'm in agreement with them but the two arguments I've heard alot are:

1: not having a dipstick helps prevent owners from pouring incorrect fluids in and causing damage and warranty claims because we all know much of the general public would just buy the first/cheapest thing on the shelf that said "transmission fluid" on it and pour it in. In reality there's 20+ different unique transmission fluids many of which do not interchange and some that there is no aftermarket substitute for.

2: reducing manufacturing cost and pressure to increase maintenance intervals with the goal of lowering the percieved cost of ownership and environmental footprint, so if your not gona be planning on servicing the transmission in it's lifetime why include a dipstick to check/fill it.

 

Those are reasonable arguments from the business side of the equation. I do not agree with them, either.

However, we (the automotive enthusiast) are a very small minority of the customer base. Manufacturer's do what is "best" for the majority of the customer base.

 

Valid true points.

This is why we exist. To find the way to be self sufficient, and bring longevity to our investments. Sometimes, those mods are to make somethings more efficient.

 

I recently got on 06 Matrix and it has an atf dipstick. It even says something about lifetime fluid on it.

Oh I still see vehicles with transmission dipsticks but the overall trend is that they are going away, even many of the HD trucks no longer have one.

Unfortunately the same trend is beginning with engine oil dipsticks, the European manufacturers started it years ago but now Ram (Stellantis) decided to exclude one on the new Hurricane engine, we can only hope others don't start following suit.

 

BMW E90 is like that. No engine oil dip stick......ugh.

 

Oh I wasnt saying anything like that. I just found it was wierd that is has a dipstick but says dont touch the fluid. Kinda odd

We are not normal, and definitely do not drive regularly "under normal conditions." Lol.

 

The only time I've been described as "normal" is when someone says, "That's normal for him".

Quick follow up to the initial install. Today I cut off the excess brackets and repurposed one so now it is hard mounted to the driver side cylinder head on the back side. Bonus now without all the extra brackets is the tube can be removed from the top side. Test fit went well so now it’s time to paint it black and put it back

Just did a transmission drop on a chevy tahoe. The transmission dip stick was a pain in the ass! I wish it were as easy as this one.

 

what kind of issues was the trans having?

 

If it's a 6L80 probably TCC failure and a pan full of metal.

 

Lol yeah i haven’t heard great things about GM transmissions

 

Their 6 speeds (especially the 14-18 ones) are terrible, we probably replace 1-4 a month and we are a small 3 bay shop.

 

Wow I didn’t realize they were that bad haha. That’s some good job security for you though. What do most folks do that have a failure? Rebuild the old one and go again, or swap it out for something else?

 

Yea most seem to fail in the 120-180k range, typically when they go they give no warning they are just done.

I just do the programming, my co-worker does the swaps.

We mostly go with GM remans because they are easy to get and have a decent warranty (3 year-100k), we haven't had good luck with parts store rebuilt units or ones from a transmission parts supplier we use.. We have put a couple Jasper units in but they cost more than the GM ones so most people don't want to spend the extra on them.

There isn't any transmission re-builders in our area so that's not really an option for us.

 

Had to replace the oil pan gasket and rear main seal. Then the transmission output shaft seal, and the transmission mount. That transmission dipstick tube fought us during disassembly and assembly. Fugger.
