Yeah I wasted approximately an hour of my life on this thread and expected an outcome…killing me!

Rather like a Kabuki Theater. IMHO we all kinda knew how the scenario was going to play out even though there are facts that are obviously missing. Condolences for the Taco though.

I haven't read all 14 pages, life is too short, but my guess is that somehow, oil was never put back in. Even a few drops of leaked oil makes a hell of a mess. Toyota engines can do some crazy things, and cruising down the highway is not all that hard on an engine. The truck had to be screaming though. for one thing the VVT system cannot function without oil

The op had a brand new non oem drain plug in her oil pan, it could have leaked out because jiffy lube didn’t install it correctly or a more nefarious sinister reason someone drained her oil in the middle of her road trip

is it improbable? Most likely but she can either have a jilted ex or be a victim of mistaken identity or maybe she cut someone off who knows lots of crazy folks out there

Never seen an engine run 1,000 miles with no oil.
Not even 5 miles with no oil.
You would know it about 5 seconds after the engine was started if there was no oil in the engine.
You aren't going to drive 1000 miles before it locks up. It's doesn't happen that way.

I think there is more to the story.

Definitely no way in hell any (even a Toyota) engine is running 1k miles with no oil. It would have had to have something in it at the very least. This puts me in the camp that thinks there may have been enough oil to not cause the magic genie lamp light of doom to illuminate, and to keep the engine going for the prescribed amount of time. But over that time frame perhaps the lower oil level was enough to still cause lubrication issues and advance rapid wear causing the engine to seize.

If I'm being real though I feel like this is still highly unlikely, I really think that the oil pressure light would have illuminated had the oil level been low enough to cause catastrophic damage. This isn't even mentioning the spike in engine temp which would have caused the temp gauge to peg out on the gauge cluster soon before engine stoppage... which also should have been noticeable. I would also be curious to see what the inside of the filter looks like.

It comes on at about 4 psi. Which isn't enough if you are turning 2,000+ rpm.
The oil pressure light is pretty much useless once it comes on. Unless you are at idle and shut it off QUICK, it's too late.

I've never tested running without oil. But I have run on a bad (not just making noise) wheel bearing for significant distances. Denver, CO to Long Island, NY was the longest. I'd like to know how far a truck can go. I also want to know if the OP had any kind of idiot light flashing during the 1000 miles before the truck blew up...

Mine started to roar on curves. (Very slightly)
11,000 miles later, I changed the bearing. (When it was a constant roar)
Which was about 1.5 years later.
    (Yes, tire wear resulted)

Goes without saying, DO NOT WAIT THIS LONG.
Waiting that long could have resulted in the bearing locking up.
    BAD....That's B.A.D.

I talk a big game on TW, but I don't practice it.

If I remember correctly this is a 4 cylinder 2TR-FE correct?

With the hydraulic lifters in that engine you would KNOW for a Fact if it didn't have oil.

Meh, it was a 4cyl engine, now you have the perfect excuse to drop in a 2jz turbo

a honda will go longer! during cash for clunkers we had some of the resin left over and dumped it into the engine with the oil drained probally ran for 5min before finally locking up.
also run one with no coolant for almost 10min with a brick on the floor bouncing off the rev limiter until it finally died. heck I knew a girl with a Nissan Sentra when I was in college. called me to help her with her nissan said it needed an oil after it shut off on the drive to school. she dumped 2 quarts into the engine didn't even show up on the dipstick, cranked over sounded like a bunch of marbles in a dryer for a min. i had more oil added that and it got quiet. she drove it for another year or so if i remember
