Insane used truck pricing lately!

Looking back in hindsight, maybe NASCAR should’ve bought and sawed-in-half all of the Superbird/Daytona before they ever hit the track ….the car destroyed stock racing.

 

...and created an icon.

 

This is a lot of it for me. I have absolutely nothing against reliable turbo charged motors, but my use case is best described as "lazy". It's in the low teens overnight here right now, and I idle the truck 5 days a week for 20 minutes to drive 4 minutes to the office. Hell, it takes about that long just to get the frost off the windshield. The 3.5 does not like to warm up quick.

Once I wasn't paying attention and went like 15k miles on an oil change. Once I didn't change the oil for a year (didn't drive 10k miles that year)

I like idiot proof motors for the most part.

 

There's no reason to boost an engine to do any of those things. Cold weather idling alone is what concerns me with turbo motors. Normally it's between 10-100 degrees here, the constant ambient temperature change probably isn't good, and I got humidity to deal with. From what I hear fleet vehicles that have turbos spend way more time in the shop, that would have to be confirmed by a mechanic.

 

We'll have some days 10 below zero and some days 105 degrees. High desert is rough on hardware that likes stable temp ranges.

I actually had the air conditioning on for a while in my work truck (2023 Frontier) because with the altitude and the goddamn sun, it got HOT in the truck. It hit about 53 today and it was T-shirt weather all afternoon. No humidity, full solar blast.

I miss Washington.

 

There are pretty easy ways to make turbo's last. Don't cold start and spool it up immediately before good oil flow. When shutting down, let the engine idle a bit so the turbo spools completely down and cools a bit so the oil doesn't coke the bearings. Oil is FAR better then it used to be even a few short years ago but no oil pressure kills bearings without a pressurized film. Change the oil at 5K no matter what the books says about 10K changes. GOOD oil, always 100% synthetic. Don't dunk it, water is horrible for cylinders but murder on turbo vanes, anything that hits the vane when it's spinning will kill it.

And keep up on all fluid changes, the engine may be designed [the 2.4 looks like a short run engine, another one is already in the wings] for a turbo but they do have heat fluctuation temp spikes under high load more then a NA does. There is a reason they have a pretty decent oil capacity for a little 4 banger.

Back on subject, I'm hearing people say they bought new 3-4 years ago and now are upside down when trying to trade in their truck.

 

That could be. I'm not upside down on my 2022 Taco but I've been seriously considering trading it in for a 2018 - 2021 Tundra and the 2 ballparks I've gotten have been between 2 and 4 grand below KBB's low end trade in figure. That might be part of why they're going low on those numbers. I might take a look at a low mileage 2020 Tundra Friday and if the dealer isn't going to at least give me the low end of KBB I'll keep my Taco and see how painful it is towing the 4 seat SXS we bought.

 

Isn’t that always the case with new vehicles? When do you buy new and expect to get more in trade-in three years down the road? Or am I missing something?

 

By upside down they mean you owe more than it's worth.

 

Have to believe the days of buying new and getting more or the same are over now, that is a big difference from making 3 years of payments only to find out what you owe is $10k more than the value of your vehicle.

 

Yea, I guess, but the most obvious variable that changes that calculation is length of loan. If a purchaser took out a 48 month loan when rates were low in 2018, then of course they’ll have a different trade-in experience three years later than someone who took out a 60 or 72 month loan in 2022 when rates had risen.

 

Paid off my 2021 4WD A/C last month... so I'm right-side-up.

According to Edmunds it has cost me ( if I sell right now ) $185 a month to own.
I think I could get more for it... with only 24,000 miles on it, it's in good shape too.

 

It is possible to be upside down if someone paid $11K over MSRP in 2021 for an Off Road (with markup and add-ons). See post #30 on this link from 2021.

Just got my 2019 TRD OR in Cement with 13,300 miles on it, tech and premium packages for $37.7k plus tax. Probably close to MSRP but its basically new. Did I get hosed? Hahah

Cement is one of the finest colors Toyota ever made- that mileage and that color, I agree- you definitely did not get hosed…

If you're happy then all is good, I thought my Sport with 29k was low mileage... your O.R. M.S.R.P. should of been a few(?) thousand higher than the Sport.
