4th gen Oil Change

It doesn’t work like that, at least for me and most people, 99% of trips are fewer than 300 miles… in which case it charges in the driveway. 300 mile trips occur probably less than every 4 months. When they are more than the EVs range, it will map a route and recommend supercharger stops along the route, down to minutes required to charge to make it to your destination. It’s usually like 20 minutes to charge up another 150 miles.

 

I used to have to drive for work, (2) 300mile trips per week. Houston/Dallas RT………
And let’s not even talk about some major weather event that takes out the electrical grid for weeks…….Hurricane, or right now in LAX with the fires….

yes EV are cool, BUT in the US, we have not created the infrastructure to support it………. Not to mention, the size of the country and its long distances between cities West of the Mississippi……….in comparison to the rest of the World…..how many countries are smaller than Texas……..

Toyota has the right idea with Hybrids………wish they made them more affordable……

 

For anyone with access to the Australian owners manual, can you check the spec on the oil filter? Thinking about switching to 0W-30 and wanted to know if it calls for a different oil filter in that market. Thanks.

 

Until you actually try it out you will not know. Everyone is different and has different use cases. We tried the experiment. Nothing to do with saving the world but my wife was due for a car. She liked the tech and she liked the instant acceleration of the Model Y Performance (she has a lead foot). It was also going to be our road trip car if we needed one because I had a little Corolla at the time for work.

WE HATED IT. The first thing before buying we were very worried about range anxiety. It is real. So then you read 303 mile range “oh that’s good who needs to drive more than that”. Well the reality is any of the posted ranges for Tesla are not even close. The best we ever got on a full charge is 256. Then once you buy it they really tell you only to charge to 80% or you will start to ruin the battery. Sure you “can” charge to 100 if you need to or want to. So then when you are on a road trip sure at a super charger you can get 150 miles worth of charge pretty quick. After that trying to charge even to 80% the charger slows way down and could take almost an hour. The range issue was our main reason to get rid of the car.

Also if you do not have access to a 15/40 plug to charge at home forget about it. It is basically useless to charge with anything lower. We had to stay at an Air bnb for a month. Tried charging with a regular plug overnight and it would charge about 5 miles. Bottom line during that month we needed to go to a super charger

I guess for some people it is great. They feel like they are helping the planet or something and they have no problem making a 3 hr road trip in an ICE take almost 4 in a EV. They love all the planning (also not that accurate when their range estimates are wrong) to go find a charger etc. Oh and lastly. Their resale and depreciation is literally no joke. We have bought and sold 30 cars in our lives and the Tesla was worse then some being giving cement boots and dropped in the Hudson.

Best thing about the Tesla and nothing compares. 0-60 with instant torque is like no other experience. Big giant screen for the tech is cool. Monthly updates to fix any issue and give you new games and tools, cool. But until you actually try the experiment you will never know.

 

Tesla drivers are the worst. A lady this morning was putting on makeup and watching youtube videos in rush hour city traffic. She was driving like an idiot.

 

In Tesla's defense — one it sure feels odd to make — that person probably drove like that in whatever she had before she got the Tesla.

 

Well, there are clearly a bunch of entitled assholes in my zipcode that drive Teslas. Ludicrous mode nut jobs.

Point in this: Following the manual on maintenance can get to 400k+.

 

Yeah, but some people who know more about this stuff than me–particularly about turbocharged engines–seem to think 10,000 is too long for turbos.

Right, and a 3rd gen at 400,000 implies a minimum 40,000 miles per year. Those numbers most certainly are a high percentage of highway cruising… which are so much easier on the engine than stop and go and short trips. If you’re most cruising around you can likely push it higher than 10,000 mile OCI

The way I understand how the regulations work, the oil grade used for the fuel economy certification is the only grade of oil the manufacturer can list (in the USA).

The 2024 Tacoma in the USA stipulates using 0W-20 GF-6A, API SP oil.

But the identical engine used in other vehicles, sold elsewhere, tells a different story. 0W-20 to 10W-30, and API SL, SM, SN, SN+ or SP are fine. This is from the UK owner's manual for the Highlander, using the T24A-FTS engine:

Do the other manuals have a different part number for the oil filter or is it the same one regardless of oil weight?

 

I am not 100% sure, I copied this over from the other forum. I have not been able to find the owners manual pdf for other countries.

I would imagine the part numbers would be the same.

Man I'm betting a nice 0w30 would work really well.

 

Maybe, I feel like 0w is too thin though. Depends on if you drive in colder climates too.

 

You guys are forgetting the official Toyota Placards (stickers) on the underside of the hood or installed in the engine bay specifying 0-20…….you can use whatever you think is best, but those Placards were created by Toyotas legal department.

My spouse is on second Lexus NX350 with same Turbo engine…….0-20, works great for Turbo, lasts a long time, especially with oil changes every 5000…..

Lexus even lets you go every 10K, but why would you……..Lexus filter is less than $10, Mobil 1 bought at Costco $40…..

 

So what if the legal department makes those placards?
