Been eyeing the 6spd MT for a long time. When the dealer had one I had to get it. It’s different. Especially when getting off road. More control kinda seems to be what it all adds up to. It’s not my daily driver so I don’t do the stop and go traffic. Even then I don’t mind it because it keeps my hands occupied and more focused on the road instead of my phone.

We only buy used vehicles. Like to depreciate assets, not liabilities :)

Would find a 14-18, ideally 17-18 Forester Premium

Was born in SF. Learned to drive there - always with a manual transmission. No problem once you get the hang of it.

Right - I love how SF hills always come up... or LA (or any other city ) traffic as a reason for an allegedly blissful move to the automatic... (as if...)

Age is often mentioned too... (I bet many most enthusiastic MT owners are older folks.)

It always sounds to me like:
"I used to be barely able to somewhat drive a manual gearbox in times of my daring youthfulness. I sucked at it even then, really...

My general capabilities continue their steep decline and I've now fully succumbed.

Since life sucks and it is unavoidable, I have now settled into the true state of myself and have given-up all hope and enjoyment."

A sort of George Coztanza- manual gearbox driver type comes to mind.

Agree. Once you get proficient at a MT, it is effortless. You don't need to think about it. -

Dude, you must be my soul brother. Its off a bit. But I built a Marty Truck for date night with my wife. It has the bench seat so she slides over close to me. I love shifting into second and 4th between her legs.... 17 years 2 kids later.

    Good times!

You two dorks are acting like it's a skill issue. Not sure what traffic is to y'all, but I can drive a manual in my sleep and I hate them in traffic. It's not about "having to think about it", it's about the fact that it's a pain in the ass to keep the clutch depressed for hours at a time. I don't deal with tons of traffic currently an a manual Tacoma would be fun, but can you really not envision other people having different circumstances? Smh

I hit a little bit of traffic every day, not much so no big deal....the only time I ever felt "ok this sucks now" with the MT was after a freaky ice storm that hit way earlier than it was supposed to, and it took me three and a half hours of sitting in traffic to get out of the city I work in. Yeah, that was no fun at all.

There seems to be some inconsistency in the above...

it seems you were doing it wrong As suspected. E.g. - Clutch depressed FOR HOURS AT A TIME (??)

But it is what it is... enjoy your auto... not trying to change anyone's mind by any means...

BTW - traffic in an auto does not at all make traffic pleasant...

I 100% can see how it would be annoying to some, but I too was stuck in SD/LA/SF traffic for 8 years, daily, you know how it is, often 3-4 hours at a time, and the clutch didn’t bug me, personally, one bit. Loved it in Cali especially. Curvy roads, hills, lots of cars to pass and maneuver around. Actually made MORE sense when I lived out there than back here in the Midwest going straight down a highway never shifting for 3 hours straight. Traffic IS the best place to drive stick and enjoy it!

Yeah, no, he’s not wrong. I had to feather the clutch for hours at a time, barely inching along in gridlock for hours in first gear, occasionally second and back to a stop again. He’s right there.

I live in Orange County, if there was a reason not to get it, it is definitely traffic. But I don’t regret it.

    1) I like preventing myself from being distracted, I have the distracted person gene and having a manual forces my to stay in tune with what is going on.
    2) It’s fun off road, yes it can be tough over certain obstacles and I’ve both burnt the clutch and stalled it on trail but that’s part of the fun.
    3) Fun neutral shifty at red lights.
    4) More/Less control in snow.

It may refer to inching along when you can’t put it in neutral and can’t keep it engaged but have to hold it down and let it partway up to move 20’ every few seconds. Can’t say I’ve had to do it for hours but certainly a large chunk of those hours in increments. I love my GF but she also chaps my hide occasionally.

The title of this thread is, "Those with Manual Transmission....Why ?". So, why are we hearing from those without a manual transmission ? (Rhetorical question).

Recently swapped my MT for AT. I’ve always said manual trucks are kind of a PITA. Should have taken my own advice. Towing, boat launch, off road, just easier in an auto. The love for my 2.7 manual first gen had me wanting to give it a go, but nope. We’ll see how long I last not being frustrated with the auto 3rd gen. Initial driving is going well though.
