    Anyone experiencing harsh shifting into gear? After starting my truck and letting it rev down I am experiencing a VERY hard shift into both reverse and into drive. A few instances it almost killed the engin. Any ideas???:confused:

    There is a TSB for a harsh shift, but it doesnt sound like it would help your problem. You still under warranty? Take that sucker to the Stealership!

    From park to drive or reverse its a hard shift. She is still under warranty. Might as well take it in and get the flash. I've driven cars where you could put it into drive while still rolling backwards and it would go into gear smooth. Just doesn't feel normal ...

    Oh HELL NO. You can ruin an automatic by doing that.

    Never ever shift into drive while still rolling backwards. Never ever shift into reverse while still rolling forward. Not if you want your transmission to be your friend. :mad:

    Whoaaaaa pump yo breaks Mr. Earth!! I'm not talking about putting her in gear going 10 MPH. Less than .5mph ever. This is the first vehicle that I've owned that shifts hard even at a dead stop..

    You're not supposed to do it at all. You're supposed to be at a complete stop with an auto. There's a sprag or a one-way clutch in there that you can tear up doing that.

    I've actually always driven manuals ... this is my first auto. And so all my mechanic and automatic buddies drilled that into my head, because manual guys get pretty used to dropping it into first before coming to a dead stop from reverse.

    But that's a really bad habit to keep with any automatic. In fact you should not only come to a complete stop, but give the tranny a chance to full engage the gear before stepping on the gas. If you've been doing that for a while, I'm not surprised it's now harsh going into first or reverse. I'd take it into the dealer for a warranty check. But you sure as hell don't want to mention this discussion. Because they might use it to void your warranty. It's in the manual as a big no no.

    I bought my truck certified used from the dealership and from off the lot it been a harsh shift. Ill take her in and see what's up

    Maybe the person who had it before you did a lot of rollback and shift into drive being lazy.....who knows can't speculate on that.

    Hopefully they will check for drive-line play and fluid level in the trans although one would hope this would be checked on a "certified" vehicle. That word doesn't seem to mean much these days. Good luck with results.

    All transmissions manual and auto can have issues show up more when trans is hot or only when cold, so a thorough check is in order.
