Those with Manual Transmission...why?

People gave that truck its turn. I never had any traffic issues or anything. Once, a delivery van was double parked blocking this tiny street way downtown; they started to hurry to let me by, but I just hopped up on the sidewalk and went around them.

 

I give way to tractor-trailers because of their size...that's what these BFTs represent when their presence is felt.

And of course, owners know this.

 

Tbh I'd likely not get another manual again. The PHEV powertrain is just like being in first gear... all the way until $fast. Engine braking is basically just using regen levels (with the flappies) .. all the brain switches are met except I get a bit of phantom clutch syndrome. Then I go wheel the taco for a bit and that's fine too.

 

This makes me think of using the clutch to engage down-shifting to help slow the vehicle before applying brakes.

Having a manual transmission involves more engagement than an automatic...hence the name...Automatic.

It does all the transactions for the driver.

I did enjoy those motions early on in my years of gaining experience with a manual transmission.

I'm sure those motor skills are still engrained in my cabeza...lol!

These days, I'm not thinking about that.

 

Yup, like how you put it into 4th/3rd on a long downhill esp while towing.

Manumatics/DSGs/etc (and really, regen control on EVs) can get you engaged again. If you so choose.. and as a manual driver, I usually do.

Most of. Sometimes the machine takes not-so-good-choices. Look at the complaints about 'transmission hunting' on the 3G 6AT.

 

Claiming that MTs are unatractive often works when looking to buy an MT in the states.

If I'm selling, I am patient. The right buyer does not take too long to appear...

I've sold multiple MT vehicles at a high premium across the coumtry and abroad BECAUSE they were manuals.

Yes the average 'joe' will be telling you no one wants a manual and everyone will prefer an automatic - And will whine at you that your price is too high. That you'll never ever sell it.

(Why they bother to inquire on a manual, I don't know...)

I always take note their best offer, and contact info - just in case. But mostly to tell them what the final sale prive was when its gone.

I've purchased vehicles in Europe and shipped them ober for the same reason.

No ome would bother to do this with an autotragic.

I bought my Taco out of state because that is where I found what I wanted - Most importantly with an MT.

An automatic was simply not an option. If I did not find a manual, I would not have a Tacoma.

 

I bought my 07 FJ and 08 Tacoma new. Both MT with about 120k miles, zero issues and will never sell them.

My around town truck is a 66 F250 Custom Cab Camper Special with a 410ci 4sp, gas mileage be damned.

Only auto is my 2020 Tundra that I would trade in a minute if they made a manual.

Well, no, other than the TL, I typically buy new; my fully optioned TRD Sport 6MT cost less than a fully optioned SR5, but when the time comes, I will absolutely be able to sell mine for a considerable premium versus an otherwise identical SR5.

 

I can put that sticker on my automatic all the same.

 

The biggest problem with a manual transmission in many cases boils down to the fact you have to be smarter than the transmission.

 

Most anyone who become competent with stirring their own gears is smarter than a manual transmission, and by definition, that means they are smarter than pretty much any autotragic transmission on the market.

 

That's my point.

 

Why? My wife and I love manual transmissions and we despise autos.

Our Dually? Manual with a short throw.

Our gen 1 Taco? Manual with a short throw. 290,000 miles and still on the original clutch.

Our hybrid? Manual (Original Insight)

Our Tesla? No transmission! Not as good as having a manual, but way better than a POS auto.

Whenever we're shopping for a new used vehicle, like the 3rd gen we just bought, our only search filter is for manual transmissions - there are still a lot of interesting vehicles out there!

We did own a Jeep with an auto. We justified it by convincing ourselves that it would be better as a rock crawler and maybe that was true. BUT - the longer we owned and drove it (12 years) the more we resented the automatic. Every aspect of driving that Jeep, even the tight spots in the rocks would have been more fun with a manual.

 

Four milllion miles in 60+ years of driving I think at one point I did own an automatic that lasted a couple of months before I sold it. Even the wife drives a manual 6 speed KIA.

 

Killing the engine with the clutch.

Two transactions that come to mind.

 

I thoroughly enjoy my manual. I thoroughly enjoy my old Firebird with an aggressive shift kit in it's auto, chirps tires too easily into second, I love it. It depends on the vehicle to me. My Tacoma is my daily and I enjoy rowing just to help make the commute a bit more enjoyable. No highway and no stop and go traffic. Since it's a new vehicle, I like opting for the gear I want, not what the epa wants. The old Firebird makes the epa type folks cringe! I love that too. If there was only one option, I'd choose the manual though.

Isn't that the case with trading any vehicle in? They'll offer you 20% less than it's worth then turn around and list it for 20% more than it's worth. Always try to sell privately if you have the time.
