5.25 or 6.5 dilemma

Ok, so I have a pair of MB Quart 5.25 components from my old car, and they are probably 6 yrs old. They sounded great when I took them out but they have been sitting around ever since.

I am thinking of using these in the rear doors with a custom speaker ring to hold the driver and tweeter, instead of buying a new 6.5 coaxial speaker. If they are both run off an amp(thinking PDX-5), would I be making a mistake using the older speakers?

 

No issues with older speakers.

If you plan on running a sub, I would probably try it, but the difference in low end out put will be worth your time upgrading to 6.5 components.

Cadence huh? I havent heard of them but it seems like they are pretty solid for $59 on ebay.

 

I'm not sure if you already have upgraded speakers in your front doors but that should deffinately be first. No sence in upgrading the rear with stock in the front. Most people who are serious about sound quality will lose the rear speakers all together

I definitely am going to upgrade the fronts with a component setup, either 6.5 or even the 8in that is getting discussed if its the right price. I wanted to put the 5.25 in the rear doors more for fill than anything else, and plus I already have them so they are free to install.

 

Go with the Kenwood XR5-S I love it, smaller then the PDX-5 as well. And I have bought every single audio component on Ebay with no issues.

 

Not only is it smaller, its more powerful and sounds better. Not sure why anyone would consider the PDX-5 with the Kenwood available for comparable price.

 

If you plan on something else up front, there is no reason not to use the speakers you already have for the back.

The "issue" with the older PDX-5 amps was noise floor, which is supposed to have been eliminated with the newer version. And quite a few people never had the noise issue on the older ones either

The power ratings are not worth looking at. First, assuming they both do rated power that 5w difference would NEVER be heard. Secondly, the PDX is known to ship with birthsheets putting it between 90 and 100w. But - a 20w difference would translate into something like 1.5-2db in volume increase - not worth sweating.


If you buy new, and its authorized, they should take care of you if you get any noise. Other than that, buy the one that floats your boat or meets your requirements for the install. Unless you are doubling power nothing to worry about on that front.
