Too many miles for a used purchase?

Hey guys, I posted a few weeks ago with some questions about a couple of used Tacos I was looking at. Unfortunately they both sold before I could make a move, but I came across a stock 05' TRD Sport LB a few days ago that has 225000 (140k miles) and looks to be in good condition. Its had one owner and had a 200K warranty on it, with all work performed at the dealer. I have yet to look at it in person or drive it, so keep that in mind. The asking price is pretty on par with KBB, but seller needs to get rid of it and is open to offers. So I'm wonder if I should be hesitant about purchasing a first year Taco with that many miles? It's attractive for me because of the low price, which is much more affordable for me than most TRD DCs in the area. Of course if that price has the potential to be offset in the near future by major repairs I'd just assume save up for a while longer and wait to get a used one with a more reasonable amount of miles.

I bought an '06 with 115,000 on it. I've put 7000 on it in just a few months. I've also done a lift, tires, bumper etc. and no problems yet. I would guess that if it has had all the service done at a reputable dealer, you should be good to go.

I'm also waiting for shit to happen, but I've been pretty lucky so far. I spent all my money modding it, so there is nothing left to fix it if something major happens.

200k mile warranty? seems fishy to me.

Otherwise..that mileage isn't out of the question for an 05. My 07 has almost 90k miles now.

 

I think he means 200K km. Personally, if it's in decent shape, I'd probably do it. My 05 is staying with me as long as it lasts. I'm at a bit over 101,000 miles and still happy with it.

 

x2... i've never seen 'warranties' that cover at over 100k. it would be horrendously expensive or so full of proviso's and limitations that you'd never get them to cover a repair.

 

Toby's right, it's a 200K KM warranty, and Toyota Canada does offer it, so no fishiness there! I guess what I'm looking for is input from people who have 2nd gens with high mileage. Annnnd if I get enough positive encouragement I'll look at pursuing it further!

05 is the best year crapstorm, but seriously, my 05 has 120K miles on it still running strong, the only thing I have had to repair was the u-joint busted on taking out my drive shaft. All in all an easy repair thanks to TW.

oh, I had to replace the mudflaps! But the 05 flaps are shorter than other years so that is one bonus.

Go for it if the price is right.

 

I am in Ontario...what are they asking$$$....I rushed to Toronto last Sept to buy my Taco from small shady dealer...he would hardly budge on price...it was only online for one hour....felt I had to move fast or it would be gone.

I grabbed it because was really clean on the frame coming from Arizonia...just like new...a few small dings in it but super rust free.

Since we can"t get reg cabs here it was a nice truck for my needs

01 base model, 2.7 manual 4x4 but it does have AC that is icy cold

108,000 miles...US truck

I had to pay $9,700 for it before taxes......no regrets 8 months later...I love it.

Hard swallow is that the truck only retailed new for 16K$ US...which was about 21k$ Canadian back then.

With our dollar worth more then the US dollar now...maybe seek an Amercan truck...might be worth the import hassles

My local Yota dealer just sold a 2008 2.7 manual 4x4 AC cab SR5 with 70,000 km for $21,000.....only lasted 2 days on the lot

 

Asking 13.9, but like I said he sounds open to negotiating. There was another 05 TRD DC LB I was looking at a few weeks ago - 78K and mechanic owned for 19,999. It went pretty quick also. The high KMs are hard to swallow, but to get it for low teens or less is hard to ignore.

 

That is a good price...I hear you on the high KM's...but hey it is a Yota and should last...might last for a while with the high KMS and you may be able to get the price down.

I know my truck is way different but just wanted to share with you what I had to pay.

Last year my dealer had a 2.7 2007 AC cab 4x4 Sr5 with 75000km ...they were asking 17,500...only lasted one day and was sold

 

I second that, same scenario with me. Bought my 06 at 113,000. Modded (and still modding) the hell out of it. Lift, tires, you name it. No problems so far. My guess would be a belt here or there and a wheel bearing at some point in the future. But other than that I can't anticipate anything all that bad. These are good trucks, pretty tough and if you do manage to do some serious damage to it it still isnt SUPER expensive. I would take it for a test and make sure you go over it very thoroughly.

I've thought about looking in the States, but I don't really want to have to deal with the border hassle. Getting financing and selling my car is enough of a nuisance, I don't want to worry about all the additional paperwork if I went that route.

 

Those miles are just highway miles,so its less wear and tear on the engine. My advise to you is look over the paperwork to see what services have been done. When they say timing belt is replaced,double check to make sure they have a timing belt replace,not to be confused with a drive belt (those are completely different belts and huge difference in price). If youre not car savvy,take someone with you or take it into a shop for inspection (around $80). Just some food for thought, (i think) when people sell cars,its because there is a problem and youre buying their problems. I say that because ive had 2 bad cases in buying 2 used cars.Good luck!

 

Ya know, I used to think that way too and it made me really nervous about buying used. But I've since come to realize that people now days routinely buy more than they can afford and have to unload perfectly good cars when things go a just a little bit south.

To that add lease returns and the people who change cars like I change underwear and you see why there are huge numbers of very good used cars out there, not just a bunch of 'problems' people got rid of. I've had three good cases in three cars, but I can go to two local used-car super centers and pick over a lot of super good looking vehicles at all mileages.

 

I purchased an 05 DCLB sport in 2009 with 145K miles. Definately highway miles and maintenanice at the dealer. It was stock and I put lift and tires, CAI imediately after purchase. Ive only put around 15K miles on it since but no problems. Ive done a similar high mileage purchase of a 1st gen and put on another 100K with no major repairs.

If it's had the necessary maintenaince and it's clean with no major abuse I think you have no problems. Get it checked and check with the dealership that does maintenaince on it.

 

Just Curious not trying 2 B a wise guy but don't you guys have spell check on your computers ? I can't spell kat correctly but when I do try it is underlined in red and the correct spelling will usually be just a right click away. BTW maintenmaince is maintenance. Not picking on U specifically I see it on a lot of posts - this just popped out at me - I'm a maintenance mechanic so that's why it popped.

I know there are a few 2nd gen trucks that have over 200k miles on them. My friend's dad has over 200k miles on his and it still runs like new.

 

If its well cared for and you like it jump it or someone else will.. Miles on well cared for taco are nothing, Its not a ford go get it!!! Jim
