[Update 5] Shop installed the wrong tires.. Need some advice

For sure. I'll bring this up when I go up there this week and see how it goes. Surely these guys have seen this thing before so there is likely already a go-to guy or solution that they've found works well

 

What kind of horseshit operation is this?! I could've swapped those tires without damaging the wheels and I don't even have a tire machine!

 

That is not cool, but the wheels can be/should be able to be fully repaired by a wheel repair shop, I would talk to management after you get the spare and it is confirmed correct.. Who ever did the work did not use the correct duck head, they make them that do not damage custom wheels, used them on $600+ wheels with no damage, mounted tires on a pair of $2500 GTR wheels once with no damage when the dealer would not... Here is a duck head for a Coats machine, just a FYI..

They can wear out fast and have to be replaced on a regular basis...

I would just ask them to reimburse you for the the cost of the repair, you give them a copy of the receipt of course...

It's madness isn't it? I am starting to wonder if I'm the crazy one for making such a big deal out of this. But it shouldn't take me EIGHT fuggin trips up to a tire shop just to get new tires put on my truck. I'm so annoyed by this whole thing.

 

We had a foot of snow around here a couple weeks ago and the past week it's been in the single-digit temps so the roads are absolutely loaded with salt and shit right now. I don't know if that still being on the wheels a bit is making it look older, but I am certain these are new.

 

Was this an independent tire dealer or one of the big chains?

 

This is solid info, thanks for sharing that. I'm sure the owner is sick of hearing from me at this point but hey, I've never once asked for anything beyond that of what was originally ordered/charged and paid for. The job still isn't done! And if I paid extra to avoid damage to the wheels then clearly that was a service not rendered.

Do you (or anyone here) have any thoughts on how much it might cost to repair? I have no idea if it's going to be a $50 thing or a $500 thing.

 

They used to be a part of Line-X but separated from them and became their own independent shop early last year. They had done a rust-proofing/underbody coat as well as a truck cap install for me in the past and they were great to work with in those two experiences. They have a near perfect rating from past customers. Seems like I got quite unlucky this time

 

You are going to have a hard time convincing them that it's fresh damage. If someone sent me pictures like that, I would have a hard time accepting responsibility. Not saying this is the case with you, but often times people don't realize they had existing damage. Looking at your wheels, are those removable trim rings/bead locks?

To me two of them look like road rash. The longer one could be from a tire machine digging in, but it doesn't look fresh.

 

Are they real bead lock wheels?? If so, can you just replace the bead lock ring??

 

If I look at pictures of my wheels from before this, they look flawless. I don't see a scratch on them. And last week when I was letting out some air, I was face-to-face with each wheel for a couple of minutes while waiting so I had plenty of time to inspect them. After the first, erroneous install, there still wasn't any damage. It was after the "corrective" action of putting the C load tires on that I noticed there were a handful of new marks.

Regarding the bead locks / trim rings, that's a great idea and I will have to confirm with Stealth Custom Series about that. If that's the case, I would consider myself pretty lucky if I could just order a new set of those rings.

 

I'm pretty sure they aren't. If I recall correctly, SCS made a post some time ago explaining that they weren't true bead locks and it was a design decision to keep up with competition. I'll see if I can dig it up

 

I have sent out and had $600+ BMW and MB wheels repaired from potholes that were bent and or cracked and had them repaired for (jobber price) $50 to $250 per wheel.... Haven't done it since Covid prices, so, maybe $10,000 now...

But for a wheel repair, that ring should be cake walk to repair....

 

No doubt about the covid pricing. Don't even get me started on that lmao

I feel like I might be able to repair it myself to be honest. I just gotta do some research on which materials to use so they don't wear off and look like a train wreck in a couple years

 

damn, a seemingly simple thing turned into a total shit show.

 

I couldn't agree more. I've even missed out on billable hours going to and from this place only to find that the job is still not finished.

 

i had a similar thing happen, with a friend of a friend referral tire shop. Got a good price, but they didnt balance properly. went back, and got rebalanced and they fucked my wheels up like this, plus screwdriver marks in the barrel from popping off the old weights. No charge though! so i took my truck back after bitching at the owner. He said it's an offroad truck, who cares? I blew up and said i fuckin care, they're brand new wheels! Also said I will be relaying the message to the friend that referred. 2nd shop did a great job, perfectly balanced and no new scratches.

Lesson learned, go to a dedicated truck shop for tires (or at least mounting and balancing). Passenger car tire shops got a bunch of grunts there, and no one cares as much about your stuff as you would.

 

For sure man. It's an unfortunate and expensive lesson learned. I thought I was taking my truck to a shop that specialized in this, I won't drop their company name, but they claim that their primary focus is custom TRUCK modifications and they have a bunch of wheels/tires on display in the shop. When I agreed to have them swap the tires on my truck, I had no idea they would just be taking it to another place to do it and then bring it back. A ton of these issues are a result of the lack of communication between the primary shop and these 3rd parties to begin with. I didn't think I'd need to hold anyone's hand for this but holy moly this has gone so off the deep end

Edit: I think your last bit ("no one cares as much about your stuff as you would") is why I always try to do things myself when I can. Especially when doing any home project of some sort. My dad always told me, if you want something done right, do it yourself. And I think about that every time shit like this happens.
