2 years ago bought a 98. On the way home my speedo said 80 my wife in her new truck said 70.
Tires seemed tiny like wheelbarrow tires. Truck had been lowered by reversing rear leaf springs. Fixed that, now tires looked really dumb. Found a set of 235/55/17 on Mustang GT rims that were a perfect fit. And my speedo was now right or close to it.
Problem is now after 2 years speedo failed. Pulled it out and cleaned it worked for 2 weeks. Now broke again. Problem is I can't find a speedo that matches. Mine has 26 teeth. I've looked everywhere, but seems no one gives tooth count. Any ideas?

Here's everything you need to know about the speedo gears. AFAIK, there's no 26 tooth count gear, but perhaps you have a 5-lug 2WD?: Speedometers, Odometers, and Gas Mileage – All Lies! – AdventureTaco

Also, it turns out that you can have your speedo or your ODO be correct, but not both. I cover the issue here. I ended up ensuring the ODO was spot on, since I care more about service intervals than the instantaneous speed. I just use a GPS if I need to worry about speed.

Mine is 5 lug 2wd. Don't care about odo, just would like to have the speedo working again. Going to try looking for a 28 tooth sender. The Amazon link said Not Available.
    And thanks for the help

If you go to the Toyota dealer and tell them you want the 26 tooth speedo gear, they can order one for you, I’d assume. (As long as they are still available.)

Land Rover people swear by these folks for failed speedometers. Might be worth an inquiry but no idea if they do Toyota. Probably cheaper to buy new.
