Just noticed the price difference between the plastic and aluminum oil filter canisters, both that fit on 3rd gens- it’s the opposite pricing of what one would think for plastic vs metal parts. Toyota logic of over pricing it’s plastic parts…

The plastic housing isn't just cheap plastic. It's FRP to withstand temperature changes and be impervious to petroleum products (like dissolves like). Cast aluminum is cheap.

Oh boy...starting off early this week I see.

What max tire size can I fit on my truck?

Sure. The plastic one breaks more often then the metal.
Neither one tends to break if you install the housing correctly.
Other then that, they both preform just the same.

    Snug is good.

    Gorilla tight is BAD.

Didn’t know the difference, but wouldn’t an aluminum part be comparable when mounted to an aluminum block, otherwise many other Toyota models that use it would have issues as well. For me and others is the issue how badly the FRP cap gets chipped and worn with age, even when using a good wrench tool for it.

Maybe should stick to the Kevlars.

I'm sure with enough Gorilla Torque, the aluminum will experience the chipping effects as composite after so many removals/installs.

yeah, when I do the last oil change myself I hand tighten it and don’t need to wrench it to get it off, but the wrench is to get it off if I have the dealer do it!

The aluminum housing is what's standard on the Lexus versions. That demographic generally does less DIY than toyota owners. Aluminum on Aluminum (i think the engine side is Alu?) creates the possibility for galling, which techs are more inclined to not do, vs a homeowner who doesn't know any better.

FRP is fiber reinforced plastic, it's not cheap and pretty damn durable. It's mostly user error (dealer over tightens, customer uses generic filter tool to remove) that results in the issue.

I use the MotivX housing tool, fits like a glove.

Yup, I decided to replace it after all my ‘free’ dealer service intervals were done as it looked terrible. I’ll keep this in mind if I ever have to replace the aluminum one.

Be advised, Ahmed at Car Care Nut Channel claims that these aluminum housings are not truly an identical replacement for the plastic housing part number.

I have 2 composite ... original and a spare I bought. May if I changed oil more often I would risk damage more often. I will wait until one of the composites breaks before throwing more money at it.

I recently bought one of each and they were about the same price. Can't remember which the Lexus has but I think it's composite. (2011) Recently sold RAV4 w/2.5l engine had composite.
