Sorry, I don't know. Have you checked the oil level recently or changed it?

    Google says,

The P0012 code in a 2017 Toyota Tacoma indicates an issue with the camshaft position timing. This could be due to a number of issues, including dirty oil, a faulty variable valve timing control solenoid, or a worn timing belt or chain.
    Possible causes
    • Dirty oil: Low or dirty oil can cause the P0012 code
    • Variable valve timing control solenoid: A faulty variable valve timing control solenoid can cause the P0012 code
    • Timing belt or chain: A worn timing belt or chain can cause the P0012 code
    • Camshaft oil control valve: A faulty camshaft oil control valve can cause the P0012 code
    • Wiring: Issues with the wiring can cause the P0012 code

    Possible solutions
    • Check the oil level and ensure it's not dirty
    • Test or replace the variable valve timing control solenoid
    • Check the wiring
    • Test or replace the camshaft position sensor
    • Check the timing belt or chain
    • Replace the camshaft oil control valve

Once the issue is resolved, you can use a scan tool to clear the error code.

Yeah, it seems to have good oil, it is coming up to the next oil change here in about 700 miles. I do them regularly every 5K miles, I've done one at 120,000 miles since I got the truck last October with ~117,000 on it. I'm going to pull the VVT solenoids and clean them tomorrow, I will report back.

I am just praying that I didn't get the one fucked up 3.5L out of the millions made. I can't seem to find very many people talking about this issue with the 3.5. Mostly just 4.0 and generic info popping up.

Strange, I haven't seen any real issues since the early 2016's with CPS issues. Fingers crossed for you

Just about to cross 80k myself and having the sample sent to blackstone. Mobil 1 with Toyota filter every 10k and the results have been good so far

The 2GR-FKS is a different animal than the 1GR-FE...the VVTi oil control valves are in the cam gears, and the solenoids are simply plungers with nothing to clean. The odds of all four going bad simultaneously are low enough to be impossible.

Before you go crazy with the shotgun, start with the simple stuff. Change the oil and use an OE filter...Mobil1/04152-YZZA1 element is what I use...6 quarts is all you need. If it has an aluminum filter housing, make sure it's an actual Toyota part and not chinesium trash (known to have issues with the standpipe/bypass valve). If the standpipe is loose/not attached to the housing, throw it in the trash and get a new OE one.

Also, pull the engine top cover and closely inspect the all wiring, especially associated with the solenoids, for any damage. This truck had a 117K life before you, and even with a stack of maintenance records, you still don't know its history 100%. A rodent made quick work of a buddy's *knock sensor harness (located in the valley under the intake) while off grid and caused similar issues.

Side note: Don't ever trust Oreillys or VatoZone...they don't know shit about fuck.

I appreciate the good info, I will change the oil and report back. I’ll pull the cover and look at the harness, during the pre buy inspection I had done they said that the only thing they noticed was one set of mouse tracks running across the cover. They didn’t see any damage from rodents, but I won’t rule that out.

PS. The code cleared itself while I was at PT this morning. It was on for the 10 mile drive there, but not when I got back to the truck an hour and a half later. Dunno

I seriously doubt a cursory inspection of the engine bay would be able to see deep into the V to determine the integrity of the various wires down there.

I was the guy with the rodent damage, it was the knock sensor wiring harness, and it took me a couple hours to get enough engine components removed to actually see the damaged wire.

I have had (4) mouse/rodent related experiences (that I had visual proof of the mouse/rodent being in the truck) and each of the (4) times something has been damaged/chewed.

If this condition continues, I definitely wouldn't take this sort of issue off of your list.

Seriously. I have a little nighttime routine that involves ultrasonic sound emitters, bright flashing LED lights, peppermint/cayenne spray, and physical spring traps. Little fuckers are smart man.
