I bought a 2013 Tacoma last week with the Maintenance light and tire pressure light on at the same time. I didn't think much about it since I've owned Toyota cars before. I know the maintenance light is just a 5,000 mile oil change reminder that is easy to reset. But it won't reset after numerous tries. Will it not let me reset the maintenance light until the TPMS issue is resolved?

The TPMS thing shouldn't matter. My TPMS light has been on for 3+ years. I haven't felt like having them replaced after they finally died. They did last over 10 years!

If that is the case why won't the maintenance light reset?

No clue. I've never tried resetting it myself. I'm one of those lazy guys that let Toyota change my oil and rotate my tires. Installing a bumper or air compressor, sure, I'll do that, lol. But oil? naw.

Yes I'm sure I have done the procedure correctly. I've done it a dozen times and it doesn't mater how long I hold the trip button when doing the procedure it won't zero out trip A. But if I just go to trip A without going thru the procedure and push the trip button in it zeros out trip A. What the hell?

Try it from the odometer and maybe even Trip B.

However, I thought that was the correct procedure for the 2.5 gens.

If that doesn’t work, maybe disconnect your battery?

Disconnecting battery won't reset the maintenance light by itself, but letting the truck disconnected from power for a few minutes might reset other parts of the computer that are causing an issue. Worth trying your procedure again after reconnecting the battery.

Battery is disconnected now, I'm going to let it sit for a few minutes. I would hate to have to take it to the dealer for this. I can't stand dash light on, I know some people can live with them on for years but not me. Next is the damn TPMS light.

TPMS is prolly just gonna require a trip to a tire shop to get new sensors.

As for the Maintenance light, I'd just ping your local TacomaWorld thread and see if you can find someone who has done it a bzillion times on their rig and would be willing to try on yours. I could prolly hitup my local thread and have 5 different people offer to help.

I set mine on the odometer, not the trip meters. Press reset and hold the button down then start the engine. Continue holding the reset button down until the numbers on the odometer show up again and the maintenance light goes off. Takes 5-10 seconds.

TPMS sensors are on Amazon. Cost runs $40-$60 for a set of 4. Any tire store will install them for about $10-$15 per tire. Of if you wait until you need tires there is no additional charge to install them at that time.

I buy mine shortly before buying tires and take them to the tire shop. Typical life is 7-10 years but I proactively replace mine with every other set of tires. That works out to about every 7 years. They might last through a 3rd set of tires but it's a lot easier and cheaper to just replace them when buying new tires. About the same cost as a tank of gas every 7 years.

Thanks for the info, I'll try your procedure for the maintenance light. As far as the TPMS sensors do you buy programable sensors off Amazon? Is there a certain brand or type to look for. I have looked at a lot of Amazon sensors and most have mixed reviews about being able to get them programed to their car or truck.

this is from my owner's manual on my 2015
    upload_2025-1-22_18-16-14.png

If this doesn't work for you, see what your owner's manual says. That's definitive.

    1) Put it on trip A, turn the key off

    2) Push the stalk, hold it down and turn the key back on, there should be hash-marks counting down. Hold until it flashes and goes back to the trip number

If that doesn't work, try it again with trip B
(or even the regular odo setting)

This is exactly what my owners manual say too. I have gone thru this at least 20 times not including the multiple times trying it on Trip B & odometer. It's not like I've never done this before I had a Toyota Corolla that I must have reset the Maintenance light 15 time in the 9 years I owned it. When I posted this question I was thinking that maybe the TPMS light was not letting me reset the maintenance light, but the consensus is they have nothing to do with each other. I'm now beginning to wonder if there is a problem in the gauge cluster or the ecu that's not letting it reset. Would a good quality OBD code reader let me reset that light??? I have a cheapo one that does the bare minimum. It will read an error code and let me clear the check engine light but that's about it.
