2022 Tacoma V6, starter grinds when cold -15°C or colder.

Brought this to the dealership twice now, first time they replaced the battery and second time they told me it is normal after I started it infront of the guy and it grinded.

Is this a normal noise? Im thinking could possibly be starter solenoid or problem with bendix or something.

Side note the mechanic told me its normal and its a noise the starter turbine does (its electric so i dont know where he would think turbines would be in a starter) and also said because the wiring is cold.

Linked is a video of what it does when started cold.

Sounds like the bendix drive gear is slow to disengaged. Or not being command to disengage soon enough.
But I don't have remote start, or push start, and that "might" be part of the issue.

I'm still old school with a key....

There are a couple Techs that live way up north in the "cold".
They should be along shortly to help.

Does the exact same thing with the push button key, also my key fob only starts it when I press the lock button 3 times, there is no remote start button I had to figure that one out.

Sounds like a slow disengage, or the start command is staying on too long.
    Or, it might be "normal".

I'd throw a scan tool on it when it happens.
Look at the Starter PID and see if it is still "on" with noise.
If not, then move to the starter.

Or better yet. What for someone that knows more about the issue.
Because I'm more versed on the 2nd Gen trucks. And I know that noise is NOT normal for them.

Hang tight man. Someone with more knowledge will be along soon to help.

Kinda normal for that temps, -15*c
The grease for the mechanical systems, especially the plunger and armature/starter drive is super cold causing the problem.

    Slow disengage makes sense.
It sounds like my older vehicles if i would start the truck and not release the key after the truck started, the starter would spin that same way.

Thats the first vehicle thats doing that with a newish starter (only 45 000km’s), Ive had older pickups do this but after lots of mileage and age. All the other vehicles I have had never did this not even at -45°C which it gets that cold sometimes here so I was concerned because its this cold for atleast 6 months of the year here.

My pre-covid, made in 'Muricuh 2018 V6 also does it at those cold temps, though the grind is maybe shorter in duration. Starter still hasn't blown up after all these years.

I don’t hear anything unusual in your video. My taco makes what I think is a belt slipping noise for half a second when I start it after sitting outside at 0F/-18C(ish) or below. Once it’s warmed up, it doesn’t do it anymore. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.

Mine made the exact same noise Wednesday morning at -15°F when I left for work. I'm hoping it's normal? :notsure:
