Even my parking garage accident last March was minor and got fixed right, but still a pain in my ass all around. Dealing with Mr Magic Money Mercedes Maggotfuck who hit me and didn't want to give up his information set it off..plus having to rent a vehicle for a week. Of course he didn't report to his insurance so I had to wait 30 days at least, meantime I had to front the deductible on my truck plus the rental cost. Grrrr

    Just rolled over 70k.

Not sure if it's a good thing or bad thing for my situation, but used values are through the roof in my area (Salt Lake City).

I'm lucky that I was able to get the other driver's insurance. She drove an additional 200yds down the road before her car died. I heard the explosion and went running down the street taking photos hoping to grab a license plate number. For reference I live on the corner.

Whoa. I hope you skewer her with legal charges for the hit and run, drunkenness, etc as much as possible. That is just absolutely vile. Did she try to get out and run on foot too?

She was just completely out of it and covered in blood when I came up to her car. Frankly I'm just happy I wasn't in the truck and didn't find a dead person in the driver's seat of the other car. It's a "sort of" hit and run, since she ended up stopping and getting surrounded by police and EMT. If there's a chance to press charges and get her off the road I definitely will.

Insurance companies typically consider a car "totaled" when the cost to repair damage is around 60-75% of the vehicle's actual cash value.

Good luck with it and I wish you the best!

You shouldn't judge all drink drivers based on a few bad apples.

Minimum hit and run...plus the obvious.

Say what one will about drunk driving but hit and run just incenses me. True piece of garbage on that one.

I'm not proud of it but I did it before and got caught, though I didn't cause anything like this. I also gave up drinking..

Re capital offense, my state considers any such offense to be violent..among other things, it bars me lifetime from getting any firearm licensing.

No harm no foul, my friend.

Not thrilled about the ban but it's my own fault.

    Update: Total Loss Confirmed

The frame was bent into a diamond shape and just about everything in the drivetrain and suspension from the rear axle to the front right wheel was either bent or misaligned. Initial estimate came in with over $20k in repairs.

The initial offer from State Farm seemed pretty low, so I refused. The comps they sent were all for 2.7L, utility package SR's. Mine is an SX package with 3.5L, which in my mind is much closer to an SR5 in value, but I'm not sure they're seeing it that way. Half of me wants to take the check and be done with it, simply celebrating that I beat depreciation, but the other half wants to fight for enough to actually be able to replace the vehicle.

Anyone here have experience with negotiation with State Farm in a total loss scenario? If so how did you get a fair cash value?

may not change the result but it will make a bigger impression on the vehicle hitting the truck (i think thats a good thing)

start calling around and searching to get an accurate value of your truck. Kbb, Carmax, Carvana anything and everything to get some numbers. Being proactive will help the process. Also did the drunk driver stop, get caught etc?

You are not at fault don’t settle for anything less than full replacement value “retail” so do your research and don’t settle for wholesale value.

State Farm will low ball you and hope you will settle for it my experience is hold out as long as you can eventually they will pay up to get you off the books.

As others said, look for comparables. They're just going to look in a blue book and rattle off a number, probably quite a bit less than that initially. Bare minimum they're not comping you appropriately re the engine etc you mentioned.

Why do they make lowball offers? Because people take them sometimes. Even if 1 in 100 takes it, that's less they have to dish out.

And especially since he's not even a millimeter at fault, grind them. Make them pay for a rental as well while you're out of a vehicle.

Aside, more motivation to stick it to Miss Thang in the criminal court system.

Is this through your insurance or hers? File the claim through your insurance if you have good coverage. They will pay out and then settle with the other company. Definitely the easiest way and they have more motivation to treat you well since you’re their paying customer.
