    Aloha,
Traveling to New York and CA for college preview on campus tours with my daughter and looking for advice on best ground transportation options from JFK airport to Manhattan in mid March.
Is yellow cab best cost and time wise? Don't want to rent a car and drive in NY.
Any pro tips would be greatly appreciated!

    Avoid rental car.

Could take public transportation, depending on traffic this could be reasonable option. If you are willing to navigate NYC as I presume a tourist.

Yellow cab, uber, Lyft, plenty of car services you can book in advance. Take a look at uber/lyft prices at the time of flight, call a car company, ask for a price. Then decide on the most reasonable option.

Just remember to take into account traffic when comparing car vs public transport. If you’ve never sat in NYC traffic, would not recommend.

How’s L.A. traffic compared the NYC?
Been to NYC once. At about 3am in the morning.
Did a 10 hours stay in Long Island, live unload and off to Canada.

I was in a tractor trailer. And in and out at night.
Ride along with my dad back in high school.

I always take an uber/lyft between JFK and manhattan. Could also do a traditional cab but i havent in years. Once you're in Manhattan, you can walk and take the subway just about anywhere. Just tap a credit card on the turnstile and hop on the subway. They've really made it easy. You can generally switch lines below ground if they connect at the same station without paying again. Most likely you'll need the blue A,C, and E lines uptown and downtown, especially if in the times square area.

Wouldn't hurt to study a subway map before you go, figure out which lines you need. Keep in mind some lines might have limited options or require additional transfers later at night, especially coming back from Brooklyn or the Bronx. Bring an umbrella.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
Would not recommend subway if travelling with daughter. Stay away from rental car, although fun traffic sucks and also now additional tolls for just entering the city plus speed cameras everywhere at 25mph. Uber/Lyft is the prime way to travel although not always the least expensive.

It’s different. NYC is condensed into a small area, with public transportation options that are actually useful. In LA, you have no choice but to drive. In NYC, driving is a terrible idea.

LA freeways are massive, bunch of lanes, exits to get off.

NY roadways are more cramped and surrounded by more “stuff”

I appreciate all the tips. Likely will do a cab to keep it as easy as possible. I never used Uber/lift but will look into it.
Whatever happen to airport/hotel shuttles, guess I haven't traveled much in a while.
