There’s no way the previous owner did any damage to the engine that would last another 88k miles before self destructing. If there was a pre-existing issue when the OP purchased the truck it would have shown itself long before 102k miles on it.

Yes plenty of engine oil. No leaks and I had just had trans fluid + oil change 2k miles ago. And i had all the other fluids checked by dipstick and if the guys dont like what they see they change it or send it in. Like I said I really was trying to make this thing last.

Trucks are assembled in Mexico, but the parts come from all over. The 2GR-FKS comes from Alabama and I believe maybe one other location but I think Alabama is the primary location. I don’t recall.

If you actually do oil analysis with Blackstone and pay extra for TBN testing you'll find that for many users skipping a 5k mile oil change (OP's stated intervals) won't be pushing things considering 10k miles is well within factory recommended intervals.

My truck under extreme conditions (short trips and cold starts) is still good for 7k miles.

So back to what I was saying, a few neglected oil changes won't lead to catastrophic failure and similarly excessive oil change intervals won't prevent catastrophic engine failure if during the assembly process there was a part that wasn't installed correctly or machined properly or a mistake occurred in the casting process etc.

Fresh oil is good maintenance but it takes a lot of neglect to cause failure.

High trans temp is the default message when the engine stalls. Software quirk. I had a Volant intake tube coupler fall off the throttle body 7 times over two wheeling trips; each time the engine stalls from the gross vacuum leak, the high trans temp message appeared. 99 problems but at least your transmission ain't one.

Most likely cause is oil leaked out from an improperly installed/damaged filter cap. An "old timer" mechanic may not handle the cartridge filter design delicately. It doesn't take much torque to tweak the plastic and cause a slow leak. I'm on my third filter cap. How much oil was in the engine when it failed?

Your engine should not have detonated that young, but it did. It's not a reflection on how you took care of it or how it was built. Car engines are pretty complex little buggers and sometimes shit happens. Good luck getting it repaired

I don’t think that did it for me this time but will update when full teardown is done. I live in a very cold climate + always check oil temps when driving on the gauge. This was very sudden with no previous issues or failures. But I’m not an expert I was just trying to be meticulous with maintenance and care.

Yes, very true for engine and powertrain. Just clarifying for the OP in post #24 that there was a time when some 3rd Gens were assembled in Texas.

Any part any time can fail . Unfortunately if it’s the wrong type of part that falls off and drops into the wrong part of the engine , any engine from any company will self destruct . Just like I have seen parts fail that fall into a corner somewhere and because of that nothing happens except that part being broken
Total luck of the draw. I also seen parts drop into bad places of a running engine and literally miss everything and end up in the oil pan

Wow if you were only covered up to 100K that'd have been some absolute dogshit luck. Glad to hear you're covered up to 110K. Hopefully it all gets taken care of swiftly and you come out of this in a better position than before it all happened.

Ohhh I hate these types of threads as this could be any one of us. Unfortunately luck of the draw. The rest of us can take comfort in that these engines and transmissions are generally proving to be very reliable due to the sheer number on the road. Approximatly 1.8 million 3rd gens were produced. Reports of many over 200-400K miles. Not all were 3.5L tho.

My then new 1992 3.0 blew head gaskets twice. Both in and out of warranty. Covered by Toyota both times. Truck still went on to serve me very well and reliably for 14 years.

OP, hopefully they quickly get to the bottom of this and have either a repair or replacement asap.

I get few missed oil changes will not cause catastrophic engine failure. But Op Tacoma has 102k miles, something cause major engine failure.
