In my experience, that comes as part of the tow package. Quick Google search for the 2024 Tacoma towing package indicated transmission fluid cooler is included

Tacoma's haven't had the external cooler since 2020-21ish? Only cooler now is through the radiator.

That's good to know. I know I had an external cooler in my 2013 TRD sport. Is the radiator integrated transmission cooler not good enough for Desert temperatures?

If you're driving bare and not towing, it's fine. But, there's videos out there of 4th gens towing near max and the transmission temps were VERY hot. Modern fluids can handle it better, but they (temps) got way to high for what I personally like. I don't hardly ever tow, so no biggie to me, but guys that tow would benefit greatly from an external cooler.

Well, I tow a 3400 lb popup, so this might be an issue for me hauling up grades in the Rockies/Sierras. Thoughts?

Most experience I have is towing that amount up a mountain pass around 2200ft with a 3rd gen and had no issues. I'm not a towing guy at all, but I would try it and keep an eye on the trans temp and see what happens. I'm sure once the experts wake up they can advise better.

I have not personally seen any threads on an external cooler installed on a 4th gen here.

I'm in the same boat. All I do is keep monitoring the transmission oil temperature gauge. So far, no issues.

Thanks, everyone. Yes, I've read their internal report and agree that the test run videos reflect the transmission fluid running very hot under hot weather conditions. A few seem aware of this. My question, as I am not a mechanic, is: can an additional external cooler be added, and would it make a difference?

Our first big summer camping trip is this summer, but that's just the Appalachian chain. Likely next summer will be Northern Rockies. That'll be the real test.

That's the real rub, isn't it?

This is a 4th Gen Tacoma, not a 3rd Gen.

This post has been deleted. I was trying to explain the two drain plugs and how to refill and refresh using the Gen 3 diagram.

On some models I’m assuming ones with the tow package, there is a transmission water cooled hear exchanger on the right side behind the radiator along with cooling lines going to the radiator

I don’t experience 100 degree ambient temps - but I was having highish AT temps while towing up hills so I added a cooler to my 3rd gen. BUT the real problem was to climb the hills the engine would be revving way up to 3000 or more RPM and the cooling system would be inadequate. The new engine produces enough torque down low (1700 RPM) to hopefully avoid this situation. I’ll find out when the snow melts in a couple months. I tried to hook up my scan gauge but the torque converter temp is not reporting- maybe has a new code?

Those temps are pretty high. Didn’t overheat - true - but I would not like to be running those temps for extended periods of time. I’m hoping my towing at highway speeds doesn’t have these temps.
