I don't mind it too much although there are times I wish people that do swaps would educate themselves more and realize that it's not as simple as just swapping some mechanical parts and deleting/modifying some wiring to make things work especially when it comes to engine swaps.

    Guilty.

    :bananadead:

I'll admit I was apprehensive about this until it honestly did sound like all I needed to do was pop the TC actuator sensors in the FJ case and disconnect the 4WD computer. This one was staying stock; but if all that separated me from AWD was a hole in the floor...I mean the transmission is already out...

But as I look back I made some assumptions about the full time vs. part time swaps "plugging in" the same, and/or perhaps I found a new combination of truck configuration (OR model with its fancy pants brake booster) and transfer case (full time). I didn't want or intend to go down the wiring and troubleshooting rabbit hole. Buuuut, here we are.

I greatly appreciate everyone's help and support with this, and while I am not sure how popular this particular setup would be, I will definitely consolidate all learnings to a single post or thread if it all gets ironed out.

Ok, may be irrelevant now; but those three items all show "OFF" with the plugs on the TC removed.

Jumping drivers side turns on L4. Interestingly is that if I key off and then back on in 4L, the VSC and ABS warnings go away and things pretty much look normal (see picture); C1268 persists either way however. Jumping passenger side (4WD) does nothing in TS data list, irregardless of L4 state.

I did just find the 4WD help thread today with all the charts and schematics which is helpful in trying to help myself. :)

I do not read voltage on either contact at the 4WD connector (one is a hard 0V which I assume is ground, the other does the erratically fluctuating small mV thing).

Key off, with the 4WD connector plugged in to the sensor, transfer case in 4H, I do not have continuity at B22 when I check at the ECU plug side of things; which I believe I should? The sensor on the TC should close that circuit, correct? Maybe this is a wiring issue; I was very careful when un-doing the wrap and conduit to allow the connectors to reach the sensors, but I suppose it's possible I damaged something without noticing since it wasn't a super friendly space to work in (was doing this with the TC in place).

I had a little time to tinker on mine when I got home from work, I can confirm unplugging the 4wd ECU sets and ABS light with C1268.
I did check voltage on the L4 circuit and it was 5v, data in the ABS module showed L4 was off but I forgot to check the ECM data.

I can confirm supplying 12v to the L4 circuit clears the light after a key cycle, depending on if you want to use the switches on the transfer case and indicators or not I think we can make it work either way.

Interesting - so to confirm, simply unplugging your 4WD ECU without any other monkey business duplicates my condition?

I completely forgot to check voltage on the L4 circuit, but I guess on the other hand it seemed to be working as it should..

I'm inclined to use the switches on case, versus what I am assuming would be some other manual switches in the cab, but I might have to chew on that. Not sure there's any particular advantage either way, other than having nothing electronic on the drivetrain other than the reverse switch. However does this confirm your initial assertion that I will need to connect IND1 to 4WD, and IND3 to L4 to (hopefully) clear the code?

Correct, while I need to confirm I think it must be that the ECM and ABS module have different voltage thresholds for L4 being on or off so at 5v I'm thinking the ECM is seeing it as being on but the ABS module is seeing it as being off thus the mismatch.

I think it would be pretty easy to grab the L4 and ADD wires under the truck and run them to the 4wd and L4 switches on the transfer case.

That I need to verify but I would think it would as the voltage on the indicator circuit should be near 12v and when the circuit is grounded the indicator turns on.

Verified jumping IND3 to L4 gets rid of the ABS light and then if you ground L4 you get the L4 indicator light and the ABS module sees the L4 input.

    It worked!! :bananadance:

I did IND1 to 4WD as well, assuming I would try to go without it as I wasn't super excited to have the 4WD light on all the time - but, it actually goes out when the TC is in 4H/Unlocked, so the indicator lights function just as if it were a conventional part time case. Quite happy about this as well.

Unfortunately the casualty of all of this seems to be A-TRAC; this didn't activate when I hit the button in low range. If you have any tiny bit of interest in trying to get this system back online, I'd certainly love it; but I totally owe you already and understand if you're over this mess already...

I think you would need to connect in the ADD input to the 4wd input as that's what tells the ABS module it's in 4wd, that theoretically should solve your A-Trac issue.

So to clarify, jump B22 (4WD) to B26 (ADD)?

Yea jump 4wd, ADD, and IND1 together, that should accomplish your goal.

If I am not mistaken, won't the locker anytime deal work? This thread is a disheveled mess of information, but I believe that's covered territory since it's also an issue for the part time case conversion guys..

That would probably be the way to do it, only other option would be to find a 4wd ECU and pigtail from a 2wd TRD OR and wire it in.

That sounds like a tricky thing to track down, unless they're more common than I think..plus I do like the versatility of having it available in high range as well. Now to get over my aversion to cutting wires...unless I can come up with some way to build a harness of sorts. I'm guessing it would be too easy for a female connector body to be available, would it...maybe if I can find a dead 4WD controller I could gut that and do it that way?

I really just need to get over this cut and splice aversion, I mean it's not a show truck and I just cut a big hole in the floor..

To my knowledge, the guy who made them isn't doing it any longer, if you're talking about the thread in the classifieds.

Never seen anything for the locker, there was a plug and play module for 2 low but the creator is no longer making them and nobody has come up with anything else.
Someone in the 3rd gen section was attempting to make a customizeable module for 3rd gens but as many of the signals are on CAN it's not really feasible.

Not sure how many 2wd TRD OffRoads are out there.

2wd trucks don't have any limitation on the locker other than being under 3mph to engage and disengage.
