Yes, they replaced the new LSD. Original problem is fixed (for now). The rear end no longer howls when slowing down between 65-55 mph. Problem now is I'm beginning to detect noise when slowing down between 30-20 mph!! I'm going to monitor it for a few months and see if it persists. I'll keep you posted.

Actually, that's the noise I have. My whining/howling seems to happen when I'm decelerating, coming up to a stop or going around a sharp turn. It actually sounds more transmission like, kinda like when a transmission downshifts, but he sound stays more constant. Strange. Especially since my truck has only 500 miles on it.

And of course I' have the Toyota tick.:mad:

Just got the taco back. I can still hear it just a little bit. It's no where as loud as it was before.

Well, after a month of listening to the replacement differential continue to make that howling or fluttering noise from 30-20 mph while decelerating or coasting I decided to take the truck back in to the dealership. I ended up having to drive around with the service tech in the truck so he could attempt to pinpoint the problem. Well, two days later, a few phone calls to their district rep about the problem and a sweet 2008 Toyota Sienna Minivan, fully loaded, as a loaner (sarcasm), they decided to put another brand new rear differential in the truck. I dont' think they ever did isolate the problem because they want me to continue to monitor the problem I was having. Did I mention I'm still driving the minivan!! I'll keep you posted.

Any noise I have heard from a rear end before has been atributed to the gears not aligned propperly. the pinion and ring gears need to be propperly adjusted or it will produce a whining sound. Since it is still happening after the LSD has been replaced, my guess would be the gear mesh.

Thanks, and please do keep us posted. Mine is still making the noise, same as always other than I'm getting more used to it. I still need to get by the dealer to have them listen to it.

Thanks to Chris4x4 for the response. I'm anxious to get back on the road and see if the second new LSD is going to be any different. Also looking forward to talking to the service tech about Chris4x4 information to see what he or his district rep thinks. We'll let you know of any new findings.

I haven't read all the replies....

When I first got my 07 - I could hear a whine in the engine. Not sure what it was - but after the first oil change (put synthetic oil in), the whine went away.

Dealership replaced the LSD again. Said they tested the backlash on the old one and everything was in spec but wanted to replace it again and have me monitor it. Service Rep said the mechanic told him the gears on this one looked better than the one they took out. But after talking to a few other people, I tend to agree with Chris4x4 regarding gear adjustment and gear mesh. I would also guess that your every day run of the mill Toyota serviceman doesn't know how to adjust the gears either.

Anyhoooo . . . I think they may have done some of the cab insulating describd in the TSB earlier in this post as the road noise sounds a lot quiter. As such, I find it a little more difficult to hear any noise from the rear end . . . mission accomplised then . . . I guess?

Hey Guys, quick question. Is there something actually wrong with it, other than the fact that it makes that whining sound? I have noticed a slight whining sound from the rear diff area when I step on the clutch, or put it in neutral, but it's never really been loud enough for me to think it was anything other than normal truck noises. It sounds like gears winding down, then it stops. Only lasts a handful of seconds.

Dealership didn't really indicate they ever found a problem. Said they tested the backlash and everything was in spec but did acknowldge hearing the noise. Also said the gears on this last differental appeared to mesh better. Of course, in my mind anyway, just because everything is "in spec" doesn't mean it is adjusted to as tight a tolerance as it could be. Example: I once had a vehicle that pulled to one side severely and no matter how many times I took it back to the shop, the mechanic said the alignment was still "in spec" with the manufacturers guidelines. Ended up taking it somewhere else and they fixed the problem.

My guess is the dealership doesn't know how to or doesn't care to adjust/tweak things as well as they could be. Based on what I've read on Tacoma World, a guy like Chris4x4 or someone that knows more about LSDs could probably open the thing up and tighten/shim things up a little bit.

    I'm rambling . . . hope this helps.

Well, I finally got by the dealer yesterday, the Service Mgr rode with me, and also one of the senior techs and both definitely acknowledged the noise (they described it as a "whirring noise"), although they didn't really have any ideas on the cause - yet. But they are going to begin doing some research with Toyota and will let me know of what course of action they plan to take.

I have the same noise, it gets louder as rpms increase and gets softer as rpms decrease, but its always there. The dealership service department told me its my air intake but its not. It seems to originate on the drivers side. I'm going to try synthetic oil like Janster said when I change the oil next week...if that doesn't fix it I'm going to assume its a belt.

I'm baaaack!!! So after a couple weeks on the 2nd new limited slip differential in my 2007 Tacoma TRD Sport, the truck was back at it . . . rear end howling while decelerating from 65 - 55 mph. Brought the truck back in to the dealership. They brought in the regional service manager again and decided to try replacing the drive shaft. No change. Ordered another new differential (for those of you that have not followed the entire thread, that's differential number 3, 4 if you count the original one). Took my differential out and spec'd the two side by side . . . same specs (identical according to the service manager). This took about a week and a half. During the next week and a half, they tested the vehicle several more times on nearly every part on the rear half of the pickup. Nothing!! They couldn't get it figured out. So, the regional manager called down to Kansas City and had someone drive a 2009 Tacoma all the way to Des Moines. I couldn't believe it when they called and told me that after three weeks they pretty much gave up and replaced the entire rear end of my truck with the 2009 rear end!! Only thing the local service manager said was it could have been the way things were put together at the factory . . . okay, whatever. I'm only a week into the new rear end. Everything seems to be okay for now. Of course, if you've followed the thread, that seems to be about a two to 4 week fix . . . we'll see I guess. Did I mention the service tech that had been working on my truck was a 20 year veteran . . .

So, if anyone is interested, here's a little update and repair history on my truck, a 2007 Tacoma 4Dr SR5 TRD Sport. I purchased it a year ago with 11,700 miles on it from a local Honda delearship. About 6 months into what I had hoped would be a beautiful friendship, I began getting really familiar with the local Toyota dealership's service department and my new best friend and service rep, Justin. In the first year I have had the following issues and the Toyota delearship has made the following replacements under warranty:
    • Suspension issues when hauling; replaced leaf springs under the TSB
    • Loud squeaking front breakes; replaced rotors
    • Windshield cracked one evening of -18 degree weather in Iowa while the defroster was blasting hot air; dealership wouldn't replace, claimed there was a rock chip that caused it though I never did see a chip in the windshield
    • rear end howling; as explained above, three new rear differentials, a new drive shaft, and in the end (hopefully this is the it) a new 2009 rear end
I've driven earlier model Ford's before; most purchased used with 60,000 + miles and never had quite some many issues. Definately didn't expect a late model vehicle to have so much trouble early on. I guess that's why there's a warranty.

Forgot to mention, prior to having the truck in the shop this last time, the front end developed a howling noise while crusing around 30-40 mph. Dealership acknowldged the noise but didn't want to address that issue until they addressed the bigger problem (see my post above). Seems all the work they did described above fixed that too . . . for the time being.

Well, took a long time, but I did take the trck back in for the dealership to troubleshoot the issue. Lo and behold, the seem to have fixed it. This was about a month ago - and I have about 1000+ miles on the truck since the repair and the sound is still gone - I hear no whining now whatsoever. They said they found some metal shavings in the rear end, and replaced the rear differential carrrier assembly. As far as I know there is no TSB on this, possible just an isolated failure. I can provide the part number on the replacement part(s) if anyone is interested. Again, this was a 2009 that made the noise from almost the day it was driven off the lot.

My 2010 4x4 has similar symptoms. Metal shavings found in differential. Major letdown for me. My 1988 Toyota never had any such problems.
