I was scrolling marketplace and found a guy selling his ovtune supercharger kit for 2k and I want to jump on it but I'd like to know others experience first because it seems like they no longer make them. He says there are 5k miles on it and he's only selling because he got a full size truck. How much reliability and drivability am I losing for this and is there any additional work needed to make it work well? I attached a few pics from his listing so you guys can see what going on. It looks pretty similar to the procharger kit but the intake tube routing makes it look like the stock airbox isn't possible which it a bit concerning.469823735_1509379579752303_8555119942245918546_n.jpg 471947340_1582292649134028_2895162719278365462_n.jpg 469634092_956249955864066_3169135809174034081_n.jpg

Juice is not worth the squeeze from everything I have read. Just get your truck tuned, and enjoy it. If you want a fast vehicle, go get a sports car.

@BoomerGVNG I have the ott tune and its been a huge improvement and while i would never pay full price, 2k for a lightly used supercharger kit is very tempting. Id be saving a good 7ish thousand dollars from what I've read.

Do you really want to reduce the reliability of an already dicey engine?

Is the Taco your daily driver? It probably makes 0 sense.

I to want clarification on how the 3.5 is dicey... Has there been failures absolutely but no where near "dicey"

Side note that would still personally be a hard no in my opinion. Previous experience with buying used performance parts in the subaru world buy new start fresh you never know what your getting used

I just can't justify the price of buying new, what are the risks of buying used? And even if there is something wrong I bet I could repair it and still not get close to the price of a new kit.

It's not just that you're buying used. I believe this was [another] OVTune prototype (maybe 1 of 2) that never made it to production (along with the failed turbo kit.)

OVTune did great things for the 3rd gen Tacoma (I believe all 3rd gen tunes use his underlying software) but the hardware was never fully ironed out.

That is something that worries me, it looks a lot less polished than the procharger kit with how the intake hoses are ran and the position of the sc. I cant even use the stock airbox which I don't like at all. Its just the 2k price tag that's kept me intrigued lol.

If you think of it as more a DIY supercharger then it might be worth the time and money. I'd recommend whoever buys this gets a custom forced induction tune (I believe a couple of the tuners provide this service.) If this supercharger can provide hp/tq upgrades similar to that of the Magnuson or Procharger and keep fueling ratios in the green... then it could still be a deal.

Again.. we all have OVTune to thank for the underlying tune software (even for Magnuson superchargers). I just don't think the OVTune hardware kits were fully vetted/finished.

Gotcha, I wonder if ott can help out since I already have their tune. This is a long shot but maybe its similar enough to work with their procharger tune. If not I would still be saving a TON of money if i had to get a custom tune. And in the description he said he will include the orangevirus dongle, whatever that is, so that may help with the tuning.

He only made a handful of turbo kits and even less supercharger kits.

Do you have any info on if they were well received? I’m assuming they stopped making them for a reason and I hope that reason isn’t that they sucked

That being said, his projected numbers on his turbo kits were very impressive but the high end numbers (700+whp) essentially needed a new fuel system, rebuilt top end on the engine, and some doodads

They never took off because it wasn’t a plug and play kit. You actually had to do the work to fabricate things. Also the turbo kit wasn’t exactly cheap. Throw into the mix he was constantly being harassed by people demanding their normal OVTune kits immediately and the inevitable ban from TacomaWorld.

His company was just too small to offer a kit like that
