On Fuelly Tacoma ORs are getting 19.4 average, which is about 1.5 less than EPA (assuming none of the 51 are hybrid). The EPA says you lose about 1-2% fuel efficiency for every 100lb. If you assume the hybrids are carrying 500lb of dead weight and provide no mpg benefit (compared to a non-hybrid) it would lose about 1.6 mpg. Subtract that from what the OR drivers are getting and a Trail Hunter should be around 18. Trail Hunter drivers are clearly driving their vehicles more aggressively.

2024 TRD Pro. Stock. Same hybrid as the Trailhunter. I don’t drive hard - at all. Commute is about 25 miles per day, 50% at 60mph, the other at 40mph. Tires at 30psi. Getting 17.6mpg overall. Didn’t buy because of mpg, but surprised it’s this poor.

Yes, chunky batteries don't help. I've wanted to give hybrid a bit more time, guess I'll give em some more.
My 4 cyl only gets 18 mpg with all my sweet aero deletions, tires and topper. Would like to get back to consistent 20 mpg.
    Appreciate your chat time.

TH getting 16.5 vs OR getting 19.5 means you'll need to put an extra two gallons in every fill up. National average is $3.12, so $6.24x52 = $324/yr. I think if you can afford $65K for a TH you're not going to sweat the $324.

Not sweating the $ at all. Just pointing out mileage averages far below what’s stated by Toyota. And, for those who say the auto manufacturers always post numbers based on perfect conditions…I came from a 2016 F-150 with posted numbers of 17/20, got 18mpg over 90,000 miles.

Interestingly, Fuelly says Ranger Raptors have been averaging 16.4. I guess if you want that kind of truck/performance that’s the mpg you are going to get.

Interestingly, I didn’t buy a Raptor…bought a TRD Pro. But, thanks for sharing.

Or your math doesn't match up with reality. I drive like a grandma, and never over 73, even in Texas. Still 15.1 best case, as low as 12 loaded and into the wind travelling west.

What did you average in previous vehicles?

The TH is also taller and has bigger tires than the stock models. And a few hundred additional pounds of bolt-ons.

My 2004 started at 18 when new, over the years (20) worked it's way down to 16.5 as the head gasket started to leak. When I sold it last summer it was 16-16.5.

Edit: This is what really pisses me off. I was hoping for at least a 1-2 mpg increase over my 2004 Tacoma. Instead...less.

I've met or exceeded epa mpg on every vehicle I've owned. Maybe not every tank, but around 90% of the time.

People say they don't drive with a heavy foot but I also hear a lot of people complain they can't lose weight even when they diet. They're eating more than they think. Maybe your driving is more aggressive than you think.

the EPA tests suck. The highway test has an average speed of 48.3mph and does not go above 60 mph. the _high speed_ test averages 48.3mph and goes over 70 mph for just ~30 seconds.

Drive faster than 65-70 mph? We have the aerodynamics of a brick. unless youve got a tailwind you wont get the epa numbers.

Why can’t they test more real world?

no clue. they haven't updated the test methodology since 2008 but even for that time, the speeds are too low.

Wouldn't be hard to get a much better test. Like, just driving a real world route 10 or 20 times and avg it. or just hold the speed at the typical interstate speed limit for more than 30 seconds if they want to keep it a lab test and eliminate wind and temp variance. hold it there for half an hour so we can actually get some real data.

They're not giving you the 48 mph mileage and publishing that as your expected highway mpg.

Yes, the testing doesn't always line up with what you get real-world, but the important thing to remember is the testing is standardized. So you can usually compare cars with confidence (at least from different manufacturers). Car reviewers generally comment on real-world mpg as well.

What I would do is look at fuelly.com for your current car, and compare your mpg to the user-reported average. Then you can look at other cars, and estimate where you'd be if you drove that car (i.e. below, at, or above average).

My fuelly average is 18mpg over 3500 miles. Very little freeway driving. But it isn’t Trailhunter.

The EPA absolutely intends for this to be real world data:

    https://nepis.epa.gov/Exe/ZyNET.exe...ndex="2011+Thru+2015"/>&QueryTerms=real+world

and a well designed repeatable lab test can do that, but the tests are just simply not representative of real world driving. people can look at fuelly to get a much more real world idea of what they can expect.
