Anyone have any pireps for AirGizmos panel mount for iPad Mini? My Garmin 696 does not power on every time so I am considering replacing it for just an iPad mount since most everything the Garmin can do, my iPad can also do. In order to accomodate the charge cable, I think I would need to switch up the location of the XPDR and the Garmin/iPad mount. My Mini has never had an overheating problem unless it's in direct sunlight. I would hope the glareshield would keep it cool enough...thoughts?

Other option is panel mount an Area 760, but that is significantly more expensive and would incur an additional nav database to pay for and keep updated. I'm unsure if I will be keeping this plane in a year anyway, so that's why I'm being cost-aware. Having a GPS that doesn't always turn on is not a great selling point!

As long as ipad is not your only relied on nav aid. Check out Juan Browne (Blancolirio youtube channel) to see how many flight problems in GA come from people relying on ipads, running out of charge etc.

Does anyone use sectionals and an E6B anymore? One of my most memorable flights was in a Cessna 120, no GPS and limited instruments. Old school

Should I have added a “Back in my day”?

I carry a VNC (Canadian equivalent of a sectional), and crime stoppers maps. It’s a fund raising thing for them, they put out incredibly detailed maps of my area that show lake names that aren’t on the VNC. I have gps, but still like to follow along on paper when I’m going somewhere other than my usual haunts. Cruising at 85 knots, I can easily keep a finger on my location and spot terrain features as well as keep it folded up smaller than the space of an iPad. And if I’m going to drop something in the lake accidentally, I’d rather it be a 20 dollar map than a 600 dollar iPad.

The sectionals in my pack are very expired. What is this E6B you speak of?

I thought I'd put up a pictorial of my son-in-law's progression in aviation over the last 4-1/2 years. He got his Pvt license, then instrument rating, then multi, got his CFI, CFII, instructed for a couple of years while he built his time for the majors. He got a good offer to do some charter flying and flew King Airs for about a year, and got hired last year by Atlas Cargo. They paid for him to get his ATP and type rating (B737-8) and in May this year he transitions to the B-777.

Awesome. Thanks for sharing. Brings back great memories. What stood out for me on all of those pictures is the "Permanent Smile". One time I decided to take a few hours of Aerobatics and spin training and ended up with that smile "issue" too.

He's wanted to be a pilot since he was 6-7 years old and he worked his ass off to get where he is. He grew up in Bogota, Colombia pretty poor. Met my daughter when they worked on cruise ships (that's her with him in front of the C90), they got married and he became a US Citizen about two years ago. He eats, drinks and sleeps flying and he has a flight simulator at home which is awesome. When I first met him his dream was to fly the Triple Seven. Looks like he's gonna get his wish. He had the option of going to 747's, but he knew they were going to be phased out in the next several years (Atlas is the largest user of the 747) and he eventually wants to go to the passenger carriers so having a type rating for B737's and B777's was more useful. He just passed the 2000 hour mark last week.

Seeing your avatar, I assume you're Navy? I was USAF for 8 years, flew medevac in C-141B's as a Flight Nurse.

Unfortunately that is exactly where my flight bag is too, along with my E6B, plotter, and outdated sectionals. I hate to admit how long it’s been since I last held the controls.

Awesome story. After the extra spin and Aerobatics lessons/training, I never worried about anything happening again. Just address it when it comes up and move on. I swear that instructor could just blink and have us in a spin.

A few goodies for sure. Also, when covering textbooks in school, I graduated from brown paper sacks to using expired sectionals.

Primary navcomm is the GNS430W above. My iPad is more reliable than that panel mounted Garmin 696!
    This is great!
