Same here, I thanked one of them just this morning with a message. And he's 150 yards away if I need to go talk to him in person. We all need people we can talk to, or listen to.

Cheers and hugs all around for this! ❤️❤️❤️

I think the inverse effect takes place when people what you've done, by which I mean you are getting help for yourself, but the people around you are positively affected by your choices. It brings people up.

So thanks for slugging it out and making that choice, not just then, but every day after. That's character. :fistbump:

Honestly, I'd be surprised if the number of people who have experienced depression in their lives was under 80%. I think its more common than most people are aware, but admitting to it isn't high on anyone's to-do list.

I agree. I've struggled with it as long as I can remember.

I spent half my 20s depressed. It was horrible and I'm thankful to be out of it every day. :)

Being active is a powerful countermeasure to "the dark".

Often just getting out, getting moving, doing something that makes you feel productive can have a profound impact on how one feels.

Unfortunately, it can be brutally hard to get moving - the pull of the dark is very powerful, scary powerful even.

My weekday alarm goes off at 6am, my immediate goal is to stagger out to the kitchen, turn on every light & the radio.

This is huge, I have an exercise program that I follow pretty religiously. And it is atleast as important for me mentally as physically. Helps work through my frustration and makes me feel better

I've drown in the darkness and walked through the fire and came out on the other side. I had to become very selfish to survive.

@six5crèéd sorry for your loss and I must tell you that by sharing your friend's passing, you've created a lot of conversations from that loss. Thank you for opening the door.

I feel the word selfish is almost always used as a negative which is unfair to you in this context. We do have an obligation to care for ourselves -- sometimes we can lose sight of that.

For the most part we all can do a bit more to help others, however for example if you get evicted because you paid your neighbors rent instead of your own things have gone too far.

Last year we did that marathon on the GMC:
I have the place & tools, some skills ,
a bit more resourses than my friend and more importantly the time.

I could have never taken that on if I still worked 65 hours a week and would have hurt myself if I tried - because I'm dumb...

    Yes, good call out.

There is absolutely a distinction between being selfish (negative connotations) and taking care of yourself (positive connotations). They are not the same though they can be confused as such.

As a complete stranger on the internet, I'll risk being the bad guy in saying this, but I've learned my lesson the hard way more than once.

You cannot help someone who isn't going to help themselves.

If you pay someone's rent as @RustyGreen used for an example, they're likely going to rely on you again and again. If you lend an ear to a friend, they're going to keep coming back with the same sob story over and over.

It's only when a person chooses to help themselves is there ever any real change. And that person has to make those changes for themselves or they're not going to last. If they make changes for someone else, it usually leads to resentment.

    You are correct.

I have often said that working in factories is a lot like the school play - every year it is the same characters with different faces.

The years go by and you (as a manager) hear the same stories over and over:

    This guy/girl took/said/did...
    The landlord...
    The neighbor...
    The cop...
    The judge...
    The ex...

Kind of a work version of "the dog ate my homework". :frusty:

As you said, you can't ever help these people improve their situation because they spend every day blaming someone else.

I was willing to listen and offer guidance to whoever came in my door, many did - a some actually listened.

I was much more selective of who I spent my resourses on however.

I guess my point is invest your charitable time and resourses carefully where there is the most chance for an improvement.

@six5crèéd sorry about your friend buddy.

hi, my name is Adam and I have anxiety. Tried multiple medications that made it all worse. Now I just deal with it.

In shop talk, where is the cheapest place to buy some round dies to use in a 1 ton arbor press? I don’t need high quality, bending stainless maybe up to 3mm thick.
