Another stupid question, and I tried googling it but I'm overwhelmed.
So, the SSD for my dinosaur laptop arrived, And now I very much regret spending the money on it, but I'm going to install it just because so how the hell do I get all the data from the current hard drive transferred onto the new one?

Google tells me the best way is to get an external hard drive, but I really don't want to spend any more money, so is there another easy way?
And when I do transfer the data, how do I go about doing it, is it pretty self-explanatory even for a dummy?

I read about some third party clone apps, but that just made me more confused.

You're gonna have to post pics of your bios.

Might even have to jump on DOS to force format/partition your drive to work on older hardware.

Super easy to do (that's for the installation part if below doesn't work).

But you're wanting to clone it - do you have an external enclosure for placing the new drive into? This way you copy it off the old drive that's currently installed.

    Yeah.
If you are going to do a fresh OS install on the new drive (something I would recommend), just copy your data files to a USB drive before you swap drives. Most should be under "Documents," "Pictures," etc. If you are truly wanting to clone the drive, that gets into intermediate territory.

If you are approaching this with a goal of learning, you will likely need to spend a little more money. I know of no way to clone a drive with only a laptop and internal SSD. There are multiple ways to clone a drive, probably some free software out there to help (I haven't done it in a while), but it's not a process that can be covered effectively in a truck forum any better than what you will find on other PC enthusiast sites. You will require more hardware or another PC (preferably a desktop PC). And you still may fail due to various reasons. This is not a beginner operation, but it is a great exercise to learn a lot.

If you are just wanting to get a working computer, you may want to adjust your goals and expectations to the above.

Not being familiar with your hardware (I only remember you said old computer), you may have legacy bios which predates UEFI. You'll just need to use MBR for your partition after you format your new SSD for install.

You *might* not be allowed to do this during a Windows install, hence why I mentioned doing this on DOS which is still available to do before installation.

Basically the boot startup is different, and your machine will need to be told how to talk to the SSD.

The other option is as mentioned above, copying specific files but I would do this onto a thumb drive directly off the old computer.

And lastly, you could just clone the drive over from the old laptop but that'll take awhile cause your laptop's HDD is going to be slow as molasses. Doesn't require another computer to do though.

Makes me regret flinching on the 7900xtx haha

They'll still sell out, nvidia will be fine.

My titan/3090ti/4090 buddy has no interest in the 5090 though, so thats something.

I think the 4080 super and 4090 cards are still solid choices.

5080 is the super duper 4080

New cards are supposed to drop 6am-7am online from what I'm reading across various sources, but not all versions will be available. I'm thinking about a road trip to Tustin, CA to blow some coin at the micro center. I'm going to call them to confirm stock on a couple items first though. :typing:

Crazy the folks waiting in line for the 5090 with such a limited supply.

I could think of 214 things to do than wait on some tech gizmo.

My hopes for a 5080ti are dashed.

That 5080 was a real let down

It's shit for what they're asking. $1300 for 10% gains over a card that launched at $1000. nVidia is just laughable with this pricing at this point. I mean, they'll sell a shit ton of them because there's a ton of people who think nVidia is the only card to buy or your computer will catch fire.

Hopefully AMD coming in with the save:

    https://youtu.be/rKfqpcVvMcg?si=LScsvY7e7F-v8SEk

The TLDR is that AMDs Radeon division head confirmed that the 9070XT is NOT going to be anywhere close to the $899 someone was talking about a week or two ago. He also hinted that some leaks are dead on, and the two others were $479 and $599. So we could see some favorable 9070XT pricing. I'm guessing they go with $599 if the next rumor is true

Internal AMD documents show that the target FPS for the 9070XT are 103% of the 4080 FE. If, big if, they hit that target then the 9070XT will be a little better than a 4080 Super and within 10% of the 5080, at half the price of the 5080.

The 9070XT might be a killer value

I can't wait to jump ship over to AMD.

I've been an nVidia GPU owner dating back to 2007, maybe earlier. Over the years they really pushed the envelope in making gaming better.

But it seems they just got greedier with time by making us pay more for less.
