I just don't get why it has to go anywhere near the city, like we have hundreds of thousands of acres of remote desert that they can use a portion of for this. But that would involve trucking it out a lot further and across the mountain passes which I'm guessing they want to avoid doing.

Usually, like most things, I'd guess cost. A lot cheaper and faster to dump it as close as they can. It's a weird move on a public health level though. And then how long will it sit? Are kids going to have stay inside who live next to it? etc. Sucks.

I'm lazy and haven't looked, but it popped up in a conversation with my dad. Are Jeep and Nissan the last two that offer (new) 4x4s with an NA V6?

If you mean the Gladiator, yes it's still NA

Don't ever recommend a Jeep to anyone

It wasn't for recommendation purposes, just talking about what's left with NA options. He's holding onto his 5th gen 4Runner until it disintegrates haha

Honestly he'd love it! That's his plan haha. He, and my mom, do not like any new cars
I'm right there with 'em tbh.
We were also talking about how seniors, not super old who shouldn't be driving, but just older people in general who aren't comfortable with all of the tech that is in new stuff, are so overlooked as a demographic, even though many of them are the ones with money to dump into a new car. A family friend in her late 70s bought a new Lexus NX and she said it was a learning curve just to get comfortable driving the damn thing and being able to operate options through a screen.

Bit of a tangent from that, but think about how much faster things go now than when today's seniors learned to drive.

Toyota's making Camrys with faster 0-60 times than Corvettes from the 60s.

Commonly-available electric cars and plug-in hybrids (think Tesla or Rav4 Prime) have 0-60 times that rival or surpass the supercars of the 80s and 90s.

They say it's just temporary while they organize it and then move it to its permanent disposal site, wherever that ends up. So hopefully not long, and yeah they likely needed to keep it close to the area that burned in order to not make the process drag out longer (or more costly) than necessary.

This map gives you an idea...the heart on the right next to the Azusa wilderness park is where we live. Red lines on the left is the area of Altadena that burned down.

From a news story, this is the site they're setting up. Red arrow is where we live behind that ridge. Can see how close it is to residential areas

I wonder if part of the reason is so they can use smaller dump trucks to navigate residential streets to the staging area, and then transfer everything to larger truck/trailer transports for the longer haul to wherever. I bet there's a big difference in cost for the equipment/fuel/operators between the two.

Sort-of related: When I lived in Chicago I'd see city garbage trucks driving around late at night all the time. Kinda weird/creepy, especially after seeing the clown-henchmen driving the Chicago garbage truck in The Dark Knight. Anyway, they did that because it was cheaper to have a crew (2-3 workers for every truck) run the collection routes during the day, then park the truck for another crew (a few drivers, probably lower on the pay scale, taking one truck at a time) drive across town to the transfer station when traffic was light.

Thank God the marines showed up and turned on the water, all that beautiful water from the Pacific northwest.
