96 taco xtra cab gauge cluster

I have a 96 taco, I must have the basic gauge cluster,(no tach). Has anyone tried to change the cluster to one that has the tach in it and does it work and read correctly. And same question for that little clock to the right of the steering wheel. Any help would greatly appreciated, thanks Kevin.

 

Good luck finding one with a tach. I have been looking for one forever. It seems that most from 95-97 came with the "basic" gauge cluster. You also need to make sure that you get one from a vehicle with the same transmission as your vehicle.

 

would a cluster from a 1 gen double cab be the same. I really do not want to add an after market one on the dash. I guess i will be visiting Jim's yota yard in Denver to do some looking around. thanks for the help

 

The clock is easy. Pop out the blank panel and pop in the one with the clock in it. The wiring for it is plugged into the back of the blank. That was the first thing I did to my new taco. Probably paid way too much for the clock on ebay ($70), but it was worth it to just drop it in, have the right color back light, and be done with it.

1st gen DC = '01 - '04 = electronic speedometer

 

yea i learnt that to day.I can find the cluster with tach, if I had a 5 speed. I'm just going to have to keep checking back.

 

Like I said earlier I have been looking for one FOREVER. Someone mentioned to me before about trying one out of a 4Runner. I have not looked at them carefully enough to know whether a 4runner one would work in the Tacoma.

 

So ... Your Taco is an automatic?

Is the auto shifter on the floor or on the column?

If it has a column shifter, you may have to decide if you can live without the PRNDL indicator lamps in the cluster.

 

I have a pretty basic 96 tacoma, and it came with a tach. Don't all 5speeds have tachs? I think if you have an automatic that would be the reason for no tach in yours.

My 96 had bucket seats, the chrome trim package, AC, and alloy wheels...but no tach.

 

I was told that the 4runners are e,ectronically drive speedo's so the won't work either. I was toldthat a 5speed cluster would work but u would loose your o/d light and your ect light. And yes mine is a auto and one the floor.

 

I am not sure that it is totally correct that all 4Runners are electronically driven. Here is a pic from ebay of a 1997 4runner cluster. It looks (at least to me) very similar to the tacoma cluster.
