Possibly. I know all the 2nd tacos , 4th and 5th gen T4Rs and FJ cruisers all use the same CV axles so who knows

any chance you have some tacoma CVs in your truck? just referred back to the total chaos instructions, and sure as shit, they call out an accessible snap ring on the 4r and FJ. also just texted my buddy with an 06 4r, and he said he just had the snap ring. no need for a press when he put his new shafts in.

red line is of course where our rings were....

Yea my donor CVs were out of a 2nd gen Tacoma.
My stock T4Rs are still in the T4R so once I get them out I'll have to check that out . Definitely interesting tho

Are the Napa brand CVs trash? I have one in my shed that just needs a new boot and was going to keep it as a spare.

100% worth keeping as a spare. until LT, i carried around two $30 rock auto ones on the trails.
even if you assume that the metallurgy of the components and the heat treating/hardening is on par with toyota OEM, the bearings/cages, and the axle shafts/splines are smaller than OEM. so trash....probably not. weaker....definitely.
that being said, with smart wheeling, they can hold up. i tossed one in so i could swap out a factory boot that had dryrotted. kind of forgot about it, and wheeled heavily with it for like a year. never broke it.

Let's talk GMRS radios. Hopefully yall know more than me. I got one in the TW secret santa about 10 years ago. played with it for a bit, but they were almost unheard of back then, so i got rid of it since there really wasn't any practical application for me.

Fast forward to today.... all of the heavy wheeling crowds i've run with have and still do used CB only, but the GMRS stuff seems to be the the go to with the overland crowd. picked up a pair of well reviewed GMRS radios (8 watt) for the upcoming overland south since it seems like what most use there.

did a few tests with them. wife in the house, and i drove away, checking in every 30 seconds or so. i know the handhelds aren't nearly as powerful as the in-car units, but i was kind of shocked at how quickly the handheld signal went to crap. I hit downtown with my CB. which is about 5 miles as the crow flies, but the GMRS started to go at the entrance to my neighborhood, which is just over a mile from my house. had the largest antenna on the radios too. i don't really want to get a vehicle mounted setup for something i'll only use a couple times a year, but if the handhelds are so limited, i might have to. thoughts?

GMRS is not a license free airwaves like CB, just an FYI not the radii police. $70(last I remember, one time fee)

GMRS uses an overlap of FRS freqs. 1 issue is Handhelds have much lower power transmit/receive than a car mount or base station unit.

Another difference to CB is the frequency used. CB is 26-27 mhz while GMRS is 462-467mhz, the higher the frequency the more sensitive they are to reflect off objects. Think of how far your home base station Wi-Fi reaches through walls to outside, 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz.

Already have the FCC license. Call sign WSGV865

Sounds like you're confirming something like a 50w car unit is going to be the necessat direction for reliable use at a mile+

I'd assume that the handhelds will fare tree in an average density Forrest than a neighborhood, but will do significantly less trying to go over a mountain or hilltop?

I know with my gmrs radio from my house to where overland South was is a straight shot would be roughly 6 miles maybe 7 and that would be a direct line from my house to them through woods and I can talk to whoever's out there on my gmrs in the 4Runner

Might as well do the same with the handhelds I already have. no point in getting rid of them for how inexpensive they are.

    You happy with the antenna?
