I'm not sure what you expected on that one... we added gears designed to make that feeling worse haha

Oh, I'm not saying I mind it or didn't expect it. Really allows me to embrace my inner 80-year-old.

I do wonder a bit about whether it will be too gutless to keep up with a strong headwind, and it would suck to have to be in 4th in those situations.

Especially with your tire size, you definitely don't want this.

I really like the idea, think if I had done 5.29s and 35s it would be a good combo for me. But I'm staying with 4.56 & 35s and I can already pull similar MPG

Burning lean in cruising is one the EPA cheated us out of. Other developed nations do it, but the EPA has a very low cap on NOx. GM products with LS engines (as an example) in Aus run around 15.2 - 15.5AFR in cruising and very light load but in the states they're locked to 14.7 in those ranges. That and the last dyno session we put a hell of a lot more timing in down in the low load zones and it has made it way easier to leave from a stop and maintain speed with less throttle input. 5VZ knock threshold is pretty high surprisingly on a healthy engine.

    Thought question:

GFC has their topper (no-tent) only now. If they made a topper with a wedge tent on the top (sort of like the Wildernest) that was cab height, would that be interesting?

    Pros:
    * all behind the cab
    * wedge profile for wind, rain, etc.

    Cons:
    * only works for people less than 6' tall b/c sleeping area is shorter
    * not a lot of room/height inside the topper, since the tent takes up the top ~8(?) inches

The only pro out of that whole list was all behind the cab. Sounds like a kneecapped GFC that's guaranteed to have GFC pricing. I already think the GFC is way too expensive for what it offers.

The biggest downside to the GFC to me is that it sticks up above the cab, even though it’s only like 6-8”. Hell my truck doesn’t even fit through my 7’ garage door anymore without airing down the tires lol. So that’s a big drawback. But yeah having a 6’ sleeping area and short canopy section would probably be worse tradeoffs.

Unless you bought it 7 years ago when it was 5k :D

You mention that the new tire/wheel combo is 20# heavier. Can you break that down? Are the tires that much heavier or is it some tire and some wheel?

What is the actual weight of your current combo?

    About 50-50 tire/wheel.

I thought the tires might be lighter b/c of less sidewall, but heavier b/c slightly wider. Turns out, even though online specs say they are only 3lbs heavier, they are actually closer to 11 lbs heavier, each.

The wheels are significantly heavier, which I never even thought to check. Obviously they are a larger diameter, but they also have more material due to the spoke design. They are about 6 lbs heavier per wheel, but then I also needed to add spacers at about 2lbs each, to clear the ADS resis at full lock.

So, I guess that's 19 per corner, but you get the point. Bleh.

Edit: Each corner is at about 95lbs. I can feel it doing a rotation.

Thx. Yeah 95# is a lot. How much of that is the Kendas? These are one of the tires on my radar for next set of 17s.

Online specs are sometimes suspect. We know this already for sizing. Sounds like reported weights need to be added to that list.

I'm still getting used to seeing your truck with fatter tires.

Yeah little truck was 4500. Frank was only 6300 though ha

Yeah I'm sure it was worth it in the long run.

Interesting. What speed are you driving at? Still your dumb 62.5mph? Or are you actually going 70-75 now?

Really? My dads tacoma runs lean on the highway. No tuning. Would have though all cars do that now.

Nope. After having my wildernest the bed was WAY too small. Not just too short but too narrow too. Plus market would be super small as a LOT of trucks are short bed these days(5-5.5' long) as people prefer the double cab.

I wanted to have them make a RTT topper. Basically they need like 3 version of the topper that can be offered at different heights with built in mounting system to flush mount or near flush mount RTTs. Retain side access. That way you can just slap whatever RTT you want on a nice topper that you can still get to your stuff from the side and keeps most the crap out of the bed. I want to try and fab this up myself at this point. Always thought it could be done well and work really well. Plus be mostly universal.

I'd messaged them about that once before. Never heard back. But clearly I've lost my clout in the social media realm compared to you :p

Not that I'd pay $3000 dollars for that which is what they'd charge anyways.

Pretty much resigned myself to never getting one due to cost alone.

Yup, if your dad's runs a little lean then something is off or he's had a tune. But burning leaner than 14.7 creates more NOx and the EPA says that's a no-no.

oh wait he did get the TRD flash with the blower. I have no idea what that changes actually.

He had the URD tunner but it never worked right. Hasn't been installed in years.

So, basically the topper they make? Just with different height options?

Close. Some integrate the rtt mounting though instead of slapping bars on it. Idea being lowest profile possible. And yeah. Like 4-6" low. And 6-8" and 12-14" heights.

Yeah, I mean this is essentially what I was suggesting, but also with a wedge that fit on top of it (and was of course, shorter).

RTT mount would be better because you could just slap an hard shell RTT on there that's a wedge if you so desired. Including the RTT that GFC made at one point.

I don't see the advange to what you're suggesting I guess in terms of cost and utility. At that point, just get a GFC and live with the height in order to enjoy the interior space.

How is an RTT mount different that the top of the "4-6" low or 6-8" and 12-14" Topper?" (maybe I don't understand what you meant by those things) Probably just some talking past each other b/c we're using keyboards.
