I hear the spare gets wear in the storage compartment.
What should I do to prevent it?

I'm going to replace the original spare with a wheel I'll run with the next set. I'd like to keep it in good shape.
My original spare still looks good at 27k miles.

It's an inch taller, going back in the stock location.

I like to sleep in my truck.
I really want to mount it on the tailgate I think it would look awesome. Maybe in the bed? Or on top of a rock or topper if you have.

Leave it under the truck, that's the best place for it (it's even out of the sunlight down there). It'll get dusty, but not worn unless you're dragging a lot of other stuff first. You said yourself it looks good.

5 tire rotations aren't worth the trouble, having to buy a new wheel and tpms (and programming).

A common solution is to have the tire shop replace the spare with one of your old tires whenever you get new ones. This controls the age of the spare, so in 10 years you're not risking having a super dry-rotted tire under there.

Personally, I wouldn't do anything until you go through two sets of tires on the truck.

Just drop the spare and check tire pressure every oil change (keeps the mechanism lubed).

Yeah, the spare gets worn out twice as fast because it's centered between the 2 rear tires.
Throw that spare out and get a set of solid rubber tires. Tires with air are so *yesterdays tech* and old fashioned, get hip man!

Pick up a rubber stall mat from tractor supply and trim it to fit. Then sammich it between the top of the tire and the cradle. No more sidewall creases in the spare. :humble:

Deflate the spare (0 psi). You carry a pump full-time for airing up at the trails anyway.
