Here's the 5th gear swap. I wouldn't do it on 4.88s with anything larger than 33s, and I probably wouldn't do it on 5.29s with anything larger than 35s (but I don't have 5.29s or 35s, lol)

I’m on 5.29s and 35s and this thing scoots. No issues with top end, I’ve had the truck up to 120 after the regear. I’d go with 5.29s you’ll like them a lot

If you’re not daily driving on the highway, yeah, 529 will get you all the power in a 2nd gen Taco. If you’ve got the 8.4” diff in the rear, the gears will hold up well. If you’ve got the 8” elocker, you probably want to get a spare diff cuz it’ll break. The front diff you’ll have to change the carrier to a 391 and up thin RG carrier because 529 only comes as a thin RG.

I've got a 5.29 TrueTrac LSD 8.4" diff for sale if interested. It was built by Zuk, the gear wizard. Has like 30 miles on it because the axle it went in didn't work out with my truck.

With 37's I can't think of any cons, it would be just a bit more gear than the 4.88's you have. 10% improvement. Enough to feel without being crazy.

Not a 5.29 issue- A 4.88 issue. Question on troubleshooting. When driving at highway speeds in CA, after an hour or so, If it downshifts to 5th or 4th, it gets stuck in that gear and wont drop to 5th or 6th. Is this a heat issue? If I pull off and wait a minute - it will shift fully and properly again. Premier West Coast Gears did the swap a month ago. They are unsure of the reason.

    Yeah.
That sounds more like a transmission issue, not a specific issue with the gears. What size tires are you running?

Trans issue more than gear ratio issue. Performance Tuning can help, but would first point to transmission fluid level and fluid condition first. I would suggest a trans fluid drain n fill so that you get the correct level in, and you can inspect fluid condition. Another thing you can do is reset the trans learned values. Can be done on either Techstream, or disconnecting the negative battery terminal over night. At first start up, turn the key to the on position and wait to start at least 5 seconds. Then start and let idle for at least 3 minutes.

Running (CORRECTED) 285/70R17 - and thought it may be transmission - so had the 60K mile service (fluid change) done. Actually at 67K. Little late.
    Still happens.

Also - am running the Magnusson Supercharger and did not have any issues prior to the gear swap. Same rims and tires for past 60K. Locks in 4th gear fully loaded or empty. May need a retune. Magnusson said the exiting tune isn't the issue. They run another company truck on 4.88's and same tune with no issue. May need 3rd party assessment?

pretty sure from all i read the mag tune is not that great - better off with one of the more common tuners - i have OTT on stock 3.5L and gears and it's amazing. I am in the works of going to 35s, 5.29s, and mag SC and i am going straight to the OTT tune.

check out the mega thread if you havent

Update Post: Regeared to 5.29, eh! The truck still seemed sluggish and ran through the gears way too quick. It definitely had more torque though but I often found myself using the ETC button. I finally paired the regear with the OTT tune and man oh man! It's a totally different truck, driving this thing is fun. When I need it to go, it goes. It's a night and day difference with and without the tune.

Does anyone with a manual truck (factory 4.30s and e-locker) plan on regearing soon? I would consider swapping to 4.30s and giving you my factory 3.91s as core plus cash. I had a deal with someone on this but it's fallen through. I have all the misc parts and fluids to do the swap. I would to 5.29s but i'm okay cruising at 1700rpm. 4.30s and 295 tires get me to identical rpms as bone stock.

Tune+5.29s fixed every complaint I ever could have had with this truck, I can’t believe Toyota would sell it with the gearing/tune they used.

I don’t want to say they had to but to get the fuel mileage and emissions within a specific range at a specific load level and vehicle speed it’s probably the ideal gearing. Not to say that it doesn’t negatively affect the way it drives because I think it does, it’s all to retain epa standards. Manufacturers get kickbacks when they reach certain percentages of total vehicles sold and models that meet emission thresholds.

    Yeah.
Not really kickbacks. They have to pay fines if they don't meet certain levels.

    Yeah.
I can't say for sure, but it looks like a pretty complete kit. Setting gears up properly takes experience or a lot of time and patience, so hopefully you and your friend have one or the other.

While it's probably a bit cheaper to do it yourself, I'd highly recommend just doing the swap with ECGS and paying a little more. I've got a lot of shade tree experience, but this is one job I trusted to experts.
