A friend of mine in high school ran into a nice buck standing on the side of the road one night. With his lights trained on the animal and girlfriend watching, he gets out and starts walking around behind it in the woods. He tells me that as he got closer to the buck, he actually crawled closer on his stomach. It took quite some time to get close and then he grabbed one of its hind legs!!!
The next thing he heard was two or three wardens clapping and laughing their heads off. They couldn’t believe anyone would try that.
I never could tell if he was joking with the girlfriend or actually thought he was going to grab a live deer!!?

So a few days ago my wife said that I should treat myself to a hunt out west. My question is, has anyone on here had a positive experience hunting mule deer/ whitetail out west. Not interested in Elk because I don’t have the room for one. I would prefer a reputable outfitter.

Muley’s in Montana seem much more prevalent over Colorado. That’s been my experience elk hunting between those two states.

both are non resident friendly for drawing tags. I think Idaho and Utah are as well

Yeah, I was thinking Montana, Wyoming or maybe Idaho. I have a friend who’s brother used to guide in Montana so he’s trying to get some information for me.

I’ve got a Montana friend who used to guide as well. Holler if you want me to have him poke around and see what’s available

Will do, I know I need to do some research. I’m just trying to see if anyone has past positive experiences. A lot of our outfitters around here are a little on the shady side and I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone. I’m more than likely looking at a fall of 2026 hunt.

Deer haven’t really recovered from the wicked winter kill a couple years ago. Are you wanting a timber hunt or lowlands sagebrush?

If you decide to do a DIY public land shoot me a PM. I’m happy to give you the intel and onX data on all the spots I’ve hunted previous years. I’ve always had mule deer tags when I hunt elk in Montana, but it’s obviously always been a secondary animal so I’ve passed on more than I should have lol
