How the hell do these things keep getting stolen? I am guessing it wasn't locked because how else could you steal one?

Where was it stolen? Location and more info? Did you have a tracker in it by chance? That's a very rare color and easy to spot, give us a better location to look for as I'm guessing in the Socal area?

Anything else we should look for in the rear? Some kind of sticker, mod or unique thing that can differentiate yours from others.

Sorry that this has happened to you.

I can use deductive reasoning and look at the license plate, but a general location (especially in the title of thread) would probably be really helpful. Ex: "Stolen Orange 3rd gen- SoCal Area" Curious about the backstory as well. Keys left in it? I assume it wasn't running at 2AM.

Do the Toyota theft deterrent system on these vehicles don’t serve its purpose?

Well, we're all speculating as of now, but in my experience, they don't work well if you don't use them (don't lock doors/keys left inside, etc).

Really easy vehicle to steal. Either with a relay attack with the fob nearby
Or jacking the door open and plugging in a tech stream or similar

Either option takes all of 5-10minutes max

Push button start is scurge that needs to disappear.

They don't even have to break the window. They get the vin on the windshield dash, copy the fob signal and steal the vehicle.

I know dealer all try to sell their buyers the aftermarket system.
The genuine Toyota system needs to be installed as an optional accessory, it doesn’t come with the truck.

    Thanks for the replies.
Monterey Park CA in San Gabriel Valley.
    Locked. I have the keys.
Two stickers on the back window. Both black circles. One with my family crest and one with my name in Japanese.
No push button. Is was a manual transmission. had an AirTag in it but it got dropped in Yorba Linda.

The truck is pinging in Yorba Linda? I have three Air Tags throughout my Tacoma and I leave a brake pedal lock overnight. It's a hassle but it allows me to sleep better at night. I'll look into getting a fuel cut off switch now for my 3rd Gen.

I'll keep an eye out for you and hope for the best.

I’ve started turning off the fobs after someone posted about doing it in another thread. Hold the lock button then push unlock twice. Obviously not a guarantee to prevent theft but at least it’s one opportunity to make it slightly less easy for these scum bags.

The Hyundai Elantra was getting high steals last year...and before that...they were mostly key ignitions.

The Elantra's with Push-to-start were not being stolen.

There is a kill switch (I've read) that FOB needs to match ECU or it will not start.

If thieves can override that, getting a more complex theft-deterrent is needed.

OP - sorry to her about your stolen Taco.

I'm really sorry this happened. It sucks and it's shitty.
Regardless of what you did or didn't do, it's not your fault someone decided to be a shitbird and steal your truck.

You already have some insight to the type of theft it was; They have enough experience/awareness to search and offload the air tag. This helps with offender analysis, likely this is someone who has a record and makes it easier to select who and where to look early on. You know time domain and area, so if it matches any previous crimes there is already a pattern which also puts you closer. Choosing a manual is also a kind of tell.
I hope you get your truck back in good condition.
